    Bureaucracy to rival the government

Director (Current Employee) Foster City, CA

ProsPay, benefits, prestigious name, cafe and gym

ConsBureaucracy to rival the federal government. Very difficult to get things done

Advice to Senior ManagementStreamline the processes, empower the staff.

Bureaucratic and focused on the wrong metrics, but stable

Web Developer (Former Employee) Foster City, CA

ProsIt’s a fairly stable place and everyone is very professional. Many people will get good work-life balance here, although sometimes weekend work and late nights are required

ConsAs far as software development goes, process is very heavy and run by – without exception – guys with heavy Indian accents and a myopic focus on "getting stories done". There is NO focus on actual quality or the user experience, despite the best intentions of designers & product owners.

Advice to Senior ManagementChange people's incentives. V.me is absolute crap because everyone is myopically focused on looking productive enough. This also means there is no cross-team camaraderie or help. People change APIs all the time without letting others know, and then the whole app breaks. This happens many times a week.

Change is required but unlikely to happen with current management

Senior Director (Former Employee) Foster City, CA

ProsVisa is a global brand and provides employees with the opportunity to work on a broad range international projects (depending on the group). The company will continue to make significant revenue at least in the short-term. The pay and benefits are very competitive.

ConsManagement says all the right things but actions are not delivered. Extremely dysfunctional at all levels of management and they do not invest in people or people development. The current CEO claims to want to grow internal strength but does not promote from within for key executive roles. It is very hard to get anything done at Visa because of the silos, procedures and internal fiefdoms.

Advice to Senior ManagementVisa management continues to accept that the current exodus of team members is perfect fine as long as there is an influx of younger staff. All of Visa's organizational knowledge walks out the door because Visa does not provide the seasoned employees with growth opportunities and then Visa repeats the same mistakes (and shocked by the results).

Big company with good benefits but lot of politics

Staff Software Engineer (Current Employee) Foster City, CA

ProsVery good benefits and good work life balance.
Mature processes and methodologies, Great amenities like gym cafes etc

ConsInnovation is difficult, lot of politics. Old timers don't want to change things and hold onto their positions. No budgets for external trainings/conferences.

Place to retire and not a place for passionate people

Director (Current Employee) Foster City, CA

ProsVisa has a good brand, leader in payment industry. It has deep pockets and consistence in revenue. Good place to retire

ConsPolitics, back stabbing, poor management and always a top down leadership.

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease talk to people who are working at ground level, reduce politic and review leadership style

    Lack of Vision

Director (Current Employee) Foster City, CA

ProsGreat benefits and good starting ground for a career in a corporate environment

ConsLack of management, innovation and trust. The Board should truly look into the competencies of the senior management (especially in Human Resources). Inconsistency, lack of creativity, it will never change.

Advice to Senior ManagementVisa would not be where it is today without the dedication of the employees who knew how to run a great company. New management, stop being so arrogant and really say to yourself, what will I bring to the table to make this place the leader.

This can be a great place to work

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Foster City, CA

ProsBeing part of a global brand allows you to really have impact.
Salary is very competitive and benefits are great
Able to work with some very smart people
Although not the 'cutting edge', the project that get done are done well

ConsIt could not be more difficult to get a decision made - really, sometimes I just wanted to say, "Pull the trigger!"
Senior leadership is very risk averse, things take a lot of effort to get moving
The culture of the company is very friendly, but really, people aren't as important as process.

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus more on the training, development, and engagement of employees. Too much talent is being wasted.

    A tale of two companies

Senior Business Leader (Current Employee) Foster City, CA

ProsSome bright innovative people; salary and bonus package decent, new leadership team is smart and focused. Good company with solid potential.

ConsToo many middle managers using Visa as a springboard to next job; insufficient understanding of business fundamentals and more interest in a splashy headline for their resume than doing something good for the business. Too much ego and boys club. People spend too much time questioning executive strategy and not enough time creating value.

Advice to Senior ManagementSubject matter expertise not always sufficiently valued. Continue to challenge mid-level managers to reveal who has the goods and who is bluffing. Still too many people squashing important information from reaching the top (in order to protect their own reputation when they've made empty promises).

    Mixed Bag

Senior Business Analyst (Current Employee) Foster City, CA

    ProsExcellent Pay, Benefits, and Co-workers

ConsDoes not let you think out of the box. Management does not communicate well.
