I worked at Visible Measures full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Visible Measures has a ton of really great employees. The environment is very open with a work hard play hard mentality. Everyone seems to become a close friend and genuinely enjoys coming into the office every day. There are lots of opportunities for growth and personal development, and there's never a fear of asking for help or guidance along the way. Genuinely enjoyed my time with the company.

    Cons

The upper management doesn't seem to have a clear mission any more. Employees are laid off left and right for cost-cutting measures and the "top priority" always seems to be changing. Too-fast growth has lead to unreachable goals over the last few quarters and there doesn't seem to be anyone stepping in to provide actionable recommendations to turn it around.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire fewer people but pay them well. Salaries are insufficient for the work required, and a higher pay scale would encourage much faster and harder work. Get a consultant in there to give good advice on goal setting and ways to cut costs (without having to cut 50% of employees)

I worked at Visible Measures full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The work is interesting and the product has a great deal of potential (if management doesn't destroy it). The people are great, it's like a big family. Benefits are fantastic.

    Cons

Upper management seem to want the company to fail. Long-term (some original) employees are being laid-off while incompetent, non-people managers are promoted. Roadmaps change almost weekly. Morale is low, if non-existent. It's very sad.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Replace yourselves with competent people who understand how to manage people and build successful products.

    Pros

Friendly people and work environment, competitive salary.
Near public transportation and near good eating places.
People eat together, watch game together and do work together.

    Cons

Aggressive work load. Expect new things across multiple teams to get done fast.
Letting go of people at least expected time just for cost cutting measures.

    Neutral Outlook

    Pros

According to crunchbase.com they have raised over 90MM in the last ten years.

    Cons

Poor management, top to bottom. Three rounds of lay-offs this year, and more to come, no doubt. Please see article in BetaBoston.com Each round has come with promises of no more lay-offs

Unlimited vacation means abuse by some, even department heads, and good luck getting anything resolved during the month of August or on any give Friday afternoon.

    Pros

Brian, CEO and Founder, is phenomenal. Great leader, strong vision, very motivational. The culture and the people there are also great. Everyone gets along and is friendly.

    Cons

The online video marketplace is still maturing. Finding a niche in that marketplace can be challenging, especially as bigger players will sometimes dictate convention. The inherent uncertainty can sometimes affect the direction.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue sharing the vision and direction with employees in a transparent manner

    I worked at Visible Measures

    Pros

Competitive pay with moderately-priced benefits package, unlimited vacation time, twice yearly company outings.

    Cons

Those positive reviews were almost certainly written by HR. There is absolutely no executive leadership to be found, no focus, no discernible goals, and I'm convinced that not a soul there truly knows what they're doing. It felt like the blind leading the blind. Ideas are hot for a matter of a week or two, until they're not and some other "thing" takes it's place. Data accumulation methodologies are questionable at best. I guess all tech start-ups have some of these characteristics to some extent, but Visible Measures seemed to be especially bad. If you see a job opening, I wouldn't even waste my time if I were you.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find a focus and stick with it.
