Former Employee – worked at Vocollect full-time

Former Employee – worked at Vocollect full-time for more than 7 years
Pros – I had a lot of autonomy in my position, but I can't say that that was the case for everyone. The company worked hard to keep benefits competitive while the cost of healthcare made it more difficult year after year.
Cons – I was also there during the layoffs and buyout of Vocollect by Intermec. I bit of a scary time there, but I think it's stabilized since then.

Current Employee – been working at Vocollect full-time for more than a year
Pros – Generally great flexibility about personal time and a true family-oriented culture (leave at 6:00 p.m. and you'll be one of the last cars in the lot); a culture that values ideas and bases decisions on facts and science; friendly people, collaborative culture that is not even slightly cut-throat; interesting work; pay that is reportedly slightly above industry average; new SVP and GM (in place of CEO) who seems to be doing the right things
Cons – Bureaucracy is increasing, especially with Intermec acquisition; management turnover has been pervasive and problematic; some managers do not seem to discipline problem employees well, causing problems for those of us who have to take up the slack; limited opportunities for advancement as growth slows; cutbacks to benefits
Advice to Senior Management – Get a long-term vision; invest in critical customer service infrastructure (quoting tools, modern pricing system); get back to Vocollect's roots in visionary, future-focused innovation

Pros – Benefits package is very generous, pay is reasonable, and management is very flexible. When you need time, you take it. Information sharing is better than most places. When management is faced with feedback or criticism, they usually take it seriously. Technology is up to date. People really like coming to work each day. Company values are more than nice words on a poster here.
Cons – Strategic focus could be better--they seem to have a "strategy of the year", and each year when it changes the previous one is "something we don't talk about anymore." Some strategic decisions have been made back and forth for so many years they've become a running gag. The new management is less open than the old management was when it comes to sharing information about the company, despite their insistence to the contrary, and there are a couple of "silos" that are hard to cross.
Advice to Senior Management – We know there are reasons why you make hard choices or change plans. Be open about them. Letting old decisions quietly rot on the vine rather than being open about their results and reasons for changing them makes you look less honest than you really are.

Pros – The environment is comfortable and the people are spectacular. There is room to grow in the company and management is always behind you.
Cons – sadly I am an intern, and there are no positions available for me to fill at this time. But I would love to work here again in the future.
Advice to Senior Management – I think management is doing a great job in moving this company forward. They know the potential and will continue to push great products to the world.

Former Employee – worked at Vocollect
Pros – There are some really great people left in the rank and file at Vocollect. Their product has significant market share and has little serious competition. Little to no pressure to work long hours or "push the envelope" Good healthcare benefits, convenient location. Still lots of potential.
Cons – The company doesn't seem to know "what to do next" The lack of competition and growth has led to stagnation in the product and innovation. The company seems to be struggling with the transition from rapid growth to a more stable low growth mode. Morale is a problem and there seems to be little trust between management and everyone else.
Advice to Senior Management – Management should convey a message of success and how to achieve it. Don't focus on winning external awards, focus on growing the current market or entering a new one.

Former Employee – worked at Vocollect
Pros – No requirement to work 8 hours - 6 or 7 hours day is fine with lunch. Free parking. Close to parkway...decent restaurants around.
Cons – No strategy ever decided by management team. Focused too much on making money from hardware although industry was moving towards software. A very afraid culture to enter new applications and markets.
Advice to Senior Management – Don't be so afraid. Do your homework and then decide to invest and go all-in. Too much indecisions applied to management decisions. Management has lost a lot of the respect of the workers.

Pros – Vocollect is a great place to work that supports it employees and works hard to maintain a life and work balance.
Cons – Potential downsides for working at Vocollect can be travel, depending on job position. There will be challeneges for any people at any company and I feel that the cons of working at Vocollect are smaller than most.
Advice to Senior Management – I think the management should plan for long term strategic growth and not be as concerned about mid term and short term results.

Former Employee – worked at Vocollect
Pros – A good balance between work and life and a laid back work environment. Since it is a small/medium size company, it feels more like a family where everyone knows others.
Cons – Salary and compensation! Can't think of anything else but do we need more :-) ?
Advice to Senior Management – They need to be clear about what their vision is and then need to communicate that clearly to the employees. If people dont see this from mgmt, they start speculating and might not deduce things the way mgmt want them. So communication is important but more importantly, it needs to be precise and very clear. Dont leave things for employees to interpret!
