    Pros

The people at vocus are great, you will undoubtedly make some great friends there that will be able to help you out in your day to day.

There's a great onsite gym, fitness classes, free soda, coffee and tea and the office itself is very interesting.

The work culture is work hard play hard but since the "merger" it's become less that than work hard stress out about your job hard

    Cons

Where to start? So back in July vocus was purchased by a private equity firm named GTCR and they bought a competitor of vocus' called cision. They have since "merged" the two into what they want to call a powerhouse in the PR software sector, and for the Cision side I'm sure that's true.

Essentially Gtcr purchased vocus for their software and not their people. There have been massive layoffs and there is a tension in the air that is palpable. Everyone (even top performers) are constantly stressed out about their jobs. The reason behind this is because vocus employees are, on the whole, paid more than Cision employees and thus they are trying to slowly phase them out in one way or another to save on cost.

With the recent "merger" avenues for advancement have severely dried up. You may get promoted once while working at vocus (IE if someone quits or gets fired) but don't expect to make it close to a management level if those are your aspirations.

Right now the company is focused on saving money and getting through this merger as quick as possible. Upper management is nowhere near in touch with the ground level employees and that needs to change.

    Advice to Management

Think of people first, I understand this is a business but morale is low and people are scared. The overall ambiguity of the situation is incredibly stressful so try and create some certainty about people's livelihoods.

    Pros

Really cool office including gym and lots of rooms where you can clear your head. Tons of free beverage choices (coffee, tea, soda fountains, etc.) Very relaxed work environment. Good work/life balance.

    Cons

No room for growth. Lots of work outsourced to India with in-office personnel front-facing with clients. Multiple layoffs due to merger, where performance and tenure does not matter as much as favoritism. Not all managers seem to be able to manage well. Compensation less than employees are worth.

    Advice to Management

Cut the fat, not the people who work harder than everyone else. More transparency would also be great.

    Pros

    -Great staff
-Free coffee, soda & sometimes candy
    -Work life balance

    Cons

We were bought for our technology, not our people. When we were "merged" with Cision, 90% of all upper management and VP roles went to current Cision employees based in Chicago and Vocus employees were let go as "redundancies", or left to avoid being let go.

It's turmoil and the communication has been very poor. They are good about announcing new acquisitions (Visible Technologies & Gorkana), new leadership structure and updates on the speed and details of the merging process, etc., but still, no one really seems to know what's happening at the details level.

    Advice to Management

Don't choose management based on location, make those decisions based on skill level and proven ability to manage people, not just processes. Make an effort to retain your good staff members, they're all leaving.

    Pros

cool office with perks like a gym and free espresso machine, great benefits and pay, PTO and time-off policy was extremely forgiving, and a ton of continued training throughout the time in the position, great for recent graduates. My managers were all insanely hard working and supportive. I also really appreciated the regular check-in meetings for our department.

    Cons

The company went through a lot of change while I was there, and many great employees got the boot when they were bought by Cision and the marketing automation side became OutMarket.

Also, gym access is somewhat limited unless you work in sales where you can make your own schedule.

    Pros

Broad range of technologies and unfettered access to learn them all.

    Cons

Required to work 48 hour on-calls with no additional compensation
Required to work 3rd-Shift with no differential
    Ineffective management and communication
    Unprofessional
Different people held to different standards; no consistency in policy, process or corrective action
    High turnover
Never back-fill open positions; lack of resources to support 24/7 production environment

    Advice to Management

I'm not sure how you can fix a department that's been broken since it's inception with the same leadership that perpetuates the same idiocy.

    Pros

    -personal growth
    -high earning potential
    -opportunities for advancement
-great people (if you take the time to get to know your peers)

    Cons

The constant change is frustrating. The inside joke is Vocus is "the world's largest start-up"...And often these changes & initiatives aren't seen through to completion, they're just tested for a period of time and more often than not they're ultimately discarded.

    Pros

Tons of career opportunity available at relatively early stages on one's career. Good money to made if you're willing to work for it. Great people....they are what keep you here. Strong SaaS B2B product. Untapped potential. Great amenities at the office, including basketball court & gym. Good work-life balance, not a hardcore sales environment. Top employees have always been taken care of. Awesome incentive trips.

    Cons

Working in Beltsville, not a very desirable place. Constant change. Turmoil & uncertainty with the acquisition, and also the investment in the Marketing Suite. Lack of leadership over the last 5 years in terms of direction & investments necessary (but hopefully thats changed with the new management).

    Advice to Management

Improve communications. Improve relations between departments. Improve data & make smarter decisions moving forward based on that data. Move the company, or at least a portion of it into DC and attract more top DC talent.
