Current Employee - Enterprise Architect in Cape Town (South Africa)

I have been working at Vodacom Group full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

At the time Vodacom was independent, at technology forefront, exciting place to be.
The Vodafone takeover also delivered a really good exposure to mergers and Multinational Group practices.
Excellent exposure to international practice, both at the service provider and the vendor level.
Great South Africa specific transformational experiences and exposures.

    Cons

    Macho culture, immature architectures
Ultimately became part of the Vodafone fold and became the receiver of top down architectures.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Less ego = more profit

    Recommends

Current Employee - Engineer in Midrand (South Africa)

I have been working at Vodacom Group part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Always something new happening! Events and promotions for employees at least 2 Fridays a month.

Cutting edge in technology, different challenges and projects all the time, innovative and exciting place to work!

    Cons

    Preference for contract employment
Some management very strict and inflexible with work hours
HR slow to respond to requests or follow up on interviews

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Prioritise permanent employment as this is the biggest detractor from an otherwise perfect company to work for. Emphasise certification training rather than only soft skills as these are more beneficial to individuals and the company

I have been working at Vodacom Group full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

There are many opportunities to grow ones career. Moving from department to another can be a culture shock sometimes, ranging from the "Old Telkom Days" to a "Google High Tech fast paced" environment. Excellent place to work with exposure to cutting edge technology.

    Cons

Innovations encouraged as long as it is done "This" way...

    Recommends

I have been working at Vodacom Group full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Great benefits like bonusses and 6 months maturnity leave. Very friendly, helpfull and knowlegeable people working here. Change is a given at Vodacom and you always get to learn new things. The company believes in training so there are many opportunities to grow.

    Cons

Lots of duplication and projects run in isolation. Many employees work very long hours and we continuously need to train vendors to do work on projects and then they leave with our business intelligence.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Use your own resources for projects instead of always bringing in Vendors

    Recommends
    Neutral Outlook
    No opinion of CEO

I worked at Vodacom Group full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Company allows you to obtain good exposure to the telecommunications industry.
There are lots of career growth opportunities as well as professional growth opportunities.
Some good Managers and Executives at the company.

    Cons

Depending on the projects, there can be lots of administration work and red tape associated with your job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Office culture and work life balance is fine, however management needs to encourage more of a culture of ownership and leadership for its employees.

I worked at Vodacom Group full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Nice people, supportive and friendly

    Cons

Too many red tapes. Approval process and decision making takes longer than necessary. And the compensation was average compared to the industry standards. There was also limited growth, training was seen as a privilege and not a necessity

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Bridge the gap between the people and management. Lots of improvement information reside with your workers.

    Pros

You really have the opportunity to grow yourself and most everyone is respectful of each other.

    Cons

It is a big company and you have to be a fighter to stand out and push you ideas otherwise you will fade away in the background.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try to find away to ensure everyone feels their worth i.e. that u are important and vital to the companies existance so "don't stay away, you'll be missed".
