Pros
Big network of Microsoft jobs
Cons
Lower pay than most other agencies.
Mediocre benefits.
After you work 1900 hours, you get a 'longevity bonus,' which is basically a week's pay. They don't actually tell you this, or tell you when you've reached 1900 hours. You just have to find out for yourself. And then when you try to request the paycheck, their payroll dept. takes forever to fulfill on it.
Advice to Senior Management
Offer better pay and better benefits.
Pros
Pay is competitive. Benefits are not.
Cons
Recruiters not communicating with you during the interview process. Difficult to get answers to questions.
Pros
Great manager
Opportunity to run your own business
Fun atmosphere (in some offices, definitely not all and this could be in the minority)
Competitive spirit
Training
Decent exposure to management, at least for a Fortune 1000
Cons
Low base - $30-$40k for a direct-hire recruiter
Poor business / job orders - sales didn't bring in good business. Because your compensation depended on being able to fill jobs, this made making money difficult. This is on the permanent placement side of the business. The contract staffing group is different as they have large tier-1 programs.
Sales organization - sales people don't produce anything but more so, the leadership was terrible. The only worked on 1 type of business and neglected the other 5-6 groups. I never saw the Director of Sales do anything.
Advice to Senior Management
Understand the business is family-run and that is fine but bring in some fresh-blood. All the execs started there in 1970-1980 and this industry does not operate the same way as it did then. Innovate!!! Especially with the economy, the company could have fared much better with more change and adaptability but the management was too stale and slow to move.
You need to diversify. Before I left, 80% of my regions business was MSP which has very low margins with profitability around 1-3%. Focus on the higher-margin business that will bring a 10-20% EBITDA. You talked about it for years but never brought in a sales and solutions leader to actually make it happen.
Pros
The industry is in an interesting transition toward managed services. Volt was once a leader in the MSP space. Volt invests in employee training.
Cons
Executive leadership has been around forever. Their thinking is stale. They do not lead or take responsibility for their past decisions. They tend to re-organize the existing leadership every year or two in the hope of solving problems that the same leadership team caused the year before. Generally, Volt does the same things over and over and genuinely expects different results. They are an aging middle-tier staffing player that dabbles in multiple business lines. They are more of a "jack of all trades" than experts at anything...
Advice to Senior Management
Several members of the executive team should retire gracefully. Bring in some new thought leadership. Learn to focus and clearly articulate goals. When you shoot for "I don't know..." you get "I don't know." Focus on a few things you can deliver well and develop solutions in these areas. Resolve the petty in-fighting between your staffing and MSP divisions. Stop trying to be all things to all people. It hurts your credibility.
Pros
Thoughtful leadership. Great company to set yourself for a career
Cons
Wish I had pto rather than vacation
Pros
Volt has aa great team of recruiters that are truly experts in their field, with a great understanding of the marketplace. The VOLT team really has teh employees and clients best interset in mind.
Cons
VOLT need to have a stronger sales force, that is already being addressed to help grow this office to a leader in Orlando.
Advice to Senior Management
VOLT need sto stay on track and contiune ther efforts to grow and become a leader in the Orlando market.
Pros
The pay was reasonable and the hours were okay. The recruiters and support staff were great to work with and knowledgeable.
Cons
Managers did not know what they were doing or how it would impact the big picture. They changed and reorganized every other week without communicating the purpose. They never waited long enough to see if the change had an impact before they were changing it again.
Advice to Senior Management
Pick a course and stay with it. Minor adjustments are always necessary, but you don't have to scrap every plan in less than 30 days.
Pros
The opportunity to do interesting work.
Cons
Poor treatment of employees who are not in sales.
dishonest management
Advice to Senior Management
Invest in your employees. Treat them with respect.
Pros
No ceiling on earning potential
Cons
Work life balance can be a challange
Pros
Wide open in terms of advancement and sales opportunities
Cons
weak brand recognition outside of West Coast
