    Pros

Great location in North Carolina. An International company with great recognition in the auto/commercial truck industry. Great cafeteria. Some very nice people who also like to do work. They will pay very well.

    Cons

Not enough enthusiasm about creating the next great product. The contract/consultants do most of the work with little help or direction from the direct hire staff. The value of the consultant/contract worker is pretty low. Management in U.S. is not in sync with Sweden therefore it can be misunderstood or a complete breakdown in communication. Leadership needs to be more proactive and more experienced on the U.S. side. A lot of insecurity and inexperience amongst direct hires therefore, they will feel threatened if there is change or challenge to status quo.

    Advice to Management

Sweden needs to understand the American market more while keeping their core values. Also review core staff as far as capabilities before hiring consultants. Reason is that it seems that less experienced direct employees are put in management positions to tell more experienced contract/consultants what to do. Management needs to do better leading people by being direct with the U.S. Market to get better results.

I worked at Volvo Trucks full-time

    Pros

Volvo has great benefits and senior management values the input of lower level employees as far as job processes are concerned.

    Cons

On some teams, supervisors and managers lack knowledge of even the most basic functions of their job and human resources and senior management take little or no action when they receive reports of employees being treated in a disrespectful manner.

    Advice to Management

Learn how to communicate effectively and stop encouraging gossip as a way to get information on employees that you do not like. Be professional.

    Pros

The work is exciting and interesting. There can be good advancement opportunities. Opportunity to work with global colleagues and travel.

    Cons

High workload, and no clear priority of what is most important. Too much focus on processes and project management, not enough resources to do the real work.

    Advice to Management

Choose the new development projects that align with a set strategy. Find the right balance between development projects and available manpower in order to get the job done right.

I worked at Volvo Trucks full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Competitive vacation time and compensation

    Cons

Unfortunately, like any other workplace, a horrible boss makes for a horrible working environment. I was especially disappointed in the inept HR department, who received numerous serious complaints regarding the behavior of my boss over the years and did nothing about it. Talented employees just continued to leave. I've heard stories from people in other departments - it's a great place to work if your department is well-run. My advice to job-seekers is this - if you get a funny feeling during your interview that something is "off", it probably is. Please don't let the vacation time and salary sway you. It's not worth it.

    Advice to Management

If great employees keep leaving a department, something is wrong. Take the complaints you get about certain managers seriously, and do something about it.

I worked at Volvo Trucks as a contractor (More than 3 years)

    Pros

It's a beautiful campus with a great cafeteria.

    Cons

You would think a place with such a great diversity of people would be friendly, but it's quite the opposite. People don't speak to say good morning or hello if they don't already know you. Even then, it's questionable. Volvo survives on the back of contract employees and there is little to no chance of getting hired on permanently. Permanent employees are constantly in fear for their jobs as "global reorganizations" are a regular occurrence and people are either laid off or forced to re-apply for their jobs at a lower salary. Jobs are often shipped to lower cost countries like Poland and Argentina. In my department there was blatant racial and gender discrimination with a few managers who liked to promote their friends and relatives and fire people who weren't to their liking.

    Advice to Management

Upper management should pay closer attention to who is running the day to day operations and give some scrutiny to departments with high turn-over rates. Perhaps value your employees, temp and full time, and give them opportunities to advance rather than treating them as disposable resources.

Keep reducing management and hire more engineers.
