Pros
Everyone knows who you are. its like your second family.
(to me its my third family after my church)
Cons
There's nothing bad about working for Vons. Its all fair.
I'm only on my 2nd year.
Advice to Senior Management
Give me 5 mores years and I'll see if my vons needs change.
The Management at my Vons is great.
Pros
Store managers make good money and there is not a lack of training. They strive for the highest standards. Great to have a store manager position on your resume.
Cons
No gray area with Vons. They don’t measure your career as a whole. They only look at the most recent results which could hold you back if they weren’t good the last week despite 15 years of overall excellent results.
Advice to Senior Management
Have a heart. When you are ready to kick the bucket are you going to be proud of your leadership of kicking ass or will you look back and say I inspired people? Remember Frontline leadership - maintain the confidence in others, be flexible, do everything you can to make each member of your team successful. Don’t manage by way of threats. Yes, you want high standards but you can get there with positive reinforcement.
Pros
Benefits packages for union and non-union workers is acceptable
Cons
Low pay
High-school atmosphere
Promotions extremely hard to come by
Limited number of full-time positions
Inconsistent scheduling
Service program is a joke
Union ensures that no matter how hard you work, your seniority trumps your performance
Low morale among underappreciated employees
Front-end supervisor "promotion" is a title only, no pay raise involved
Ridiculous sales expectations for outside departments
Advice to Senior Management
Our CEOS are taking home $10 million every year and they want to obliterate the union health benefits package to "save money". I know many people believe that Vons employees are overpaid for the jobs we do, but we provide a necessary service. I know that what many of my fellow employees would like most is the end of the threatening atmosphere. We walk into our breakroom and there are more signs posting all the things that we can do to get ourselves fired than anything else. A few months ago, the company threatened to lock us out for the crime of demanding fair pay and benefits. Vons is your typical money-hungry multibillion dollar company. They care nothing for their employees. My advice to prospective employees: stay away if you can. NOBODY who has worked at Vons for an extended amount of time enjoys their job, literally NOBODY.
Pros
for a retail manager the pay is good, with my bonus I was able to frequently make 6 figures
they do allow for work life balance and are pretty good about it, but many times I end up working 12-15 hours because they payroll is so tight I have to stay and check
Cons
Ever since Vons went from a leadership style called Frontline, to a ridiculous style they made up called ACT things have completely gone downhill. You will be audited to death and most likely be written up and threatened with termination if you fail them. You are forced to promote a mystery shopper program that is ever changing and difficult and has NEVER been able to prove it increases sales and customer satisfaction. Everything you do will be dictated, you are not allowed to think for yourself or think outside the box, all you do is execute the next program that some idiot in corporate came up with. You will have multiple demands in a fast paced environment. Worst of all as another Vons manager stated in their review, you are judged by the day, not by your career. You will work in fear of your job on a daily basis. Trust me the money sounds great, but to many it's not worth it. Those who are young enough to get out, do. Those who are too old to go are just praying they can survive until they retire.
Advice to Senior Management
Return to Frontline leadership. It worked, it produced results and happy managers. Right now managers self esteem has been destroyed, we are hard working and dedicated manager who care but that doesn't seem to matter to any of you. You seem to enjoy writing up store manager and watching them squirm. I am tired of squirming.
Pros
-guaranteed raises
-flexible hours
-opportunity for advancements
-benefits
Cons
-fixed raises (a good employee and lazy employee receive the same paycheck)
-management looks down upon employees
-little motivation to work hard
-unreal customer service expectations
-usually understaffed
Advice to Senior Management
employees would work harder if given the proper motivation and recognition.
Pros
Great people to work with and made alot of friends. Learn alot about customer service and people skills. Some days can be fun and challenging and have good hours
Cons
They treat there employees like baby's. And give upper management to the wrong people. My department manager was 23 and she was immature and didnt take responsibility for her work. Department managers like to have there clerks to write at least one "No" per day. Which i believe was Ridiculous because it just cause a war between departments. role play was the most dumbest approach to keep there customers satisfied, instead it made there customers uncomfortable while you have to say ONE party comment, TWO facts, ONE opinion, and a closer.
Oh yeah, and in the break room they'll have propaganda playing 24 hours and wouldn't allow there employees to watch TV like normal people. List goes on but you can figure it out.
Advice to Senior Management
treat your employees with dignity because there making your commission.
Pros
There is room to advance in the store and get more hours and better pay.
Cons
everyone has to start as a courtesy clerk regardless of experience
Advice to Senior Management
work hard and care about what you do.
Pros
The pay is above the average mark.
Cons
Corporate implements new policies and works slowly to take care of their associates.
