Current Employee - Manager in Winterthur (Switzerland)

I have been working at Wärtsilä full-time

    Pros

Technology plays a strong role. R&D is valuated. Good training program. Good co-workers. All this is still highly location specific.

    Cons

Has become bureucratic. Has lost long-term development focus. Bad market situation
Leads to bad benefits. Lack of upper management influence on biggest issues, like use of limited resources to most important issues.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus should be in technology not in processes. Cost savings should allow full-scale effort to maintain competitiveness.

    Neutral Outlook

I have been working at Wärtsilä full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

A global company with a robust market share. There are lots of opportunities to move in other job roles and the training possibilities are very good

    Cons

Very much set on the Finnish local standards. Even if the company is spread all over the world, the top management team is extremely unbalanced toward the Finnish nationality. In synthesis it could be said that Wärtsilä is a global but not international company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I work in IM. Advise to CIO and his team is to make better decisions on organization structure and to more effectively communicate with the staff.

I worked at Wärtsilä full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Good Company Brand. Knowledge and experience in this field is of no good in India however, once experienced one can move out of India to earn good salary. The objective of many people in these division is to move out of India.

    Cons

O&M service division is good for diploma holders and not for engineers. However, fresh engineer i would advise to get into design related profile than O&M.
HFO based generation is a thing of past as the prices of fuel have rendered the cost of generation unviable in India. Bleak prospects for such power stations in India.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Move out of this business to thermal based generation and shifting to O&M of thermal generating stations will nullify the impact of the slowdown.
Cost of generation through DG based generator is even higher than peak power rates. Therefore, my humble advise is to shift towards either thermal based generation or renewable.
