I worked at WAND Corporation full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Was a good place to get your "foot in the door"
The company will probably grow, and improve in all of the cons, but for now and in the past... see below.

    Cons

Insanely high expectations for below average paid employees
Little to no training for extremely specific knowledge requirements to do your job
The feeling that you are about as useful as a peon working for a fast food joint
No communication between management and lower tier employees (unless management has a problem with employees performance)

I have been working at WAND Corporation full-time

    Pros

There have been many positive changes over the last six months -

    1. New Leadership Team
    2. Jeans day EVERY Friday
    3. Employee Development and Training
    4. Professional Certification reimbursement
    5. Objective vs subjective employee measurements
    6. NO time clock for exempt employees
    7. New break policy
    8. Advancement oppurtunities

It's so good to see positive attitudes and happy employees. The culture of WAND has really begun to change!

    Cons

The building certainly has it's concerns inculding proper ventalation and leaky ceilings. A new buliding would be nice.
    More parking would be nice!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

In today's virtual world it would be nice to have a telecommuting program.
    More then one employee entrance.
    Keep the positive changes coming.

    I worked at WAND Corporation

    Pros

There were several friendly people that I meant and shared similar struggles with regarding Wand and its issues and there were good resume' buildign opportunities.

    Cons

Very low pay and you can never work enough hours to please the Perrills. A dirty building with inadequate ventilation in the "gymnasium" where the cube farm is located....seriously the place smells. Wand upholds a strict revolving door policy and they do not care about their employees at all. Do not plan on being rewarded for any successes -expect longer hours instead.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Sell your company to Wendy's and let a real business fix all the problems you have created.

I have been working at WAND Corporation

    Pros

    Comradeship between fellow technicians.
Occasional food and beverages on Fridays.
Leadership too busy to really pay attention and will actually let you do your job and sometimes you get a minute to breathe.

    Cons

Pay rate is way below industry standards with the amount of general IT knowledge as well as amount of work expected.
Expect to be yelled at for small mistakes. You have to be able to learn and grow within in a company and not be tormented, interrogated and threatened for small mishaps. Engage the technician face to face and work with them to fix the issue and not by writing emails bashing their intelligence and reporting them to all the supervisors.
Management does not have IT background or credentials to really help out in situations of assistance from technicians.
Training in this place is ridiculous you could spend over two months and still not know everything, there is no standards and their idea of a ticket/shipping system makes it just about impossible not to make any mistakes and then they yell at you for problems that are beyond your control.
Information lookup is another joke, no one in the company keeps it up to date which makes it impossible for the technicians to really get the information they need on the fly to help the customer.
Mixed up call rate expectations: They care more about numbers rather than quality of care with customers calling in for help. They rather get the calls out of the queue as quickly as possible and end the calls as quick as possible instead of handling calls with care making sure the customer's issue is handled on the first call.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Retention rates do matter! If you see your staff leaving at an increasing rate it should alarm you! Don't ignore it and think that morale doesn't matter, if you do ignore it sooner or later you will not have a staff and your reputation will be laughable.
Have realistic expectations: You are not paying people enough and not setting good incentives for people to stay in the place. When level 2 techs are are only paid a dollar more than a level 1 you have a problem. When you claim to have a hierarchical structure of supervisors and tiered support staff, abide by it and always have someone there for technicians to go to. Have supervisors that know information technology or have a background in it. Just because you have a title of supervisor does not mean you are an IT supervisor, and in this department it's all IT.
Upper management of the company never really is visible to this department and lets it continue to to disintegrate. If they cared about anyone there they would rid the management and get someone in there who knows how to effectively run a help desk and want to retain its people!

    Pros

free doughnuts (one per person) on fridays. THATS IT!

    Cons

projects are poorly managed, with absolutely insane expectations. lots of (unpaid) overtime with a standard 45 hour week. management is aloof to the realities of software development and much of the work completed is very sub par. there is this overwhelming rah rah attitude which is contradicted by the poor working conditions. all of this for less than market rates!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

RETAIN YOUR PEOPLE. stop the constant turnover and pay market rates, and staff accordingly to minimize the constant mandatory OT

    I worked at WAND Corporation

    Pros

Well the upside to having bad management is that they usually have no clue what's going on at least some of the time. So you can luck out once in a while and relax.

    Cons

Seriously there are A LOT of issues with this company. First they expect 45+ hours a week, second they treat employees like it's a McDonalds and track every minute of every day. You want to goto the bathroom or get a coffee, oh boy two people will probably confront you on it. They are over bearing, generally disrespectful, and try to manage by guilt and incompetence. The only time they were nice is when they do the interview process. They under pay, over work, have zero direction, and constantly hiring since everyone quits almost weekly. It's a sad, sad company to work for.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Calculate how much you spend on hiring, training, advertising jobs, and then compare that with just treating your employees with some respect and a real wage. Employees work 45 hours a week just to make 5 hours of OT and earn what they could working 35-40 hours at another company.

I have been working at WAND Corporation

    Pros

If you work there for a while, a person can take on anything they want and nobody will bother them. If management feels that they can rely on you, a person can do anything they want and in any way you want. I have never met anyone that didn't like the work, it is the management and the culture that is difficult. If a person can prove a concept can work, the management will allow the project to go forward. The programming department develops a wide variety of programs using SQL, XML, reporting tools, and other variety of integrations. The company does many things and it does allow the software developer to spec out the software.

    Cons

Long hours. 45 hour minimum. If a person wants to look good, they should work late. Its not what time you get there, its what time you leave. The management can be very unreasonable with timelines for enhancements for bug fixes. When a large project comes due, the programming department will work between 60 to 70 hours a week to make sure the project gets done. This happens about twice a year for about 3 weeks at a time. They did hire a project manager to deal with some of this. They have a hard time keeping people, but management does not see high turnover as a problem. If they have one or two people that stay, they are happy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

People get tired of working 60 to 80 hours a week.

Great software! Great Reporting! Great People there - they just dont seem to stick around long

    Cons

High turnover, systems getting a little pricey, help desk not what it used to be - you can definately tell a change in the help desk over the years. Will say it has gotten better in the past year. Was pretty unresponsive a couple years ago
