Worked there for 5 years. Had to leave because they have no structure for any advancement

I worked at WECC full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Benefits and flex time approach are phenomenal. The old staff that was there when i started was amazingly knowledgeable about the EE industry. They are all gone though.

    Cons

Hostile work environment where in upper management made decisions without communication to staff implementing policies and programs remained woefully understaffed with no aim of success at the highest level. The staff below incompetent upper management made due many times in spite of those that were tasked with leadership and many times to the determent of their own sanity and career. I fulfilled no less then 4 jobs during one point in my tenure, was verbally abused on more than one occasion for managements own failings. When put in a hostile work environment with a coworker and complained to management, they later tried to move the coworker into a direct supervisory role after the fact because they had forgotten the whole thing. This led to my near immediate departure shortly thereafter. it was only upon my departure that management even acknowledged work done, and value to the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The Board of Directors fails in their roles as stewards of this once great organization as they have not instituted wholesale change but rather are blinded by earnings of one business unit that is operated independently of the whole. There is good somewhere, but the newer (4 years and less) management staff is toxic to the culture that was the WECCIE.

I have been working at WECC full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great benefits, flexible schedule, friendly staff members, nice building and location

    Cons

Executive leadership isn't what it should be - time for the CEO / President to consider stepping down and for the board to find a replacement that actually leads, sells, and goes after opportunities. The timid approach doesn't work. a big part of the problem is that the board members and the rest of the executive team have all been appointed or hired by the current CEO.....

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change has to start at the top.

    Ineffective Management, No Communication.

    I worked at WECC full-time

    Pros

Benefits are great, and there are some really wonderful people who care about the company's mission. There are some Sr. Managers and people like HR and Accounting who try to help employees, and are doing their best to tread water, but it's not enough. The problems exist at a higher level.

    Cons

There is no communication; executives are too busy being self-important to share any real information with staff.
There is no accountability for anyone, so when things don’t get done, or get done poorly, there’s a lot of finger pointing and no real resolution.
The employees who do put in the extra time and effort do not get recognized, and those who do finally move on to other opportunities are dismissed with a “who cares” attitude.
I cared about the company and my co-workers, but had to leave to find a more stable and healthy working environment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Open your eyes to the problems, and admit when mistakes have been made. Start showing appreciation for your good employees before you lose them all.

I worked at WECC full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Company had great principles and meaningful purpose. Company provided great benefits.

    Cons

Lack of opportunities and support to develop as a professional. Management changes of hires led to Sr. Management structure that did not understand and guide the company correctly.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Re-evaluate Executive Director and Sr. Management Leadership objectives. Provide a realistic relationship to utilities and leadership to understand the market needs and recover from

    Pros

None for this company at all.

    Cons

Too many to list within the organization. They were re structuring for over 2 years and paid a company to do this for them and all that changed were the titles.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Get new management.

WECC cares more about having slick managers and a trendy appearance than creating innovative products/services.

I worked at WECC full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Good benefits/PTO. Modern building and equipment. Comfortable, organized workplace.

    Cons

Management didn't care enough about their products which was supposed to be innovative demand side management solutions for gas/electric utilities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire the nerds/designers to start developing useful products for utilities. There are so many opportunities in this emerging market and it shouldn't be hard to find bright innovative people in Madison. MBAs helped WECC grow fast in an organized way, but they shouldn't be the ones charged with leading product development.

I have been working at WECC full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    Great co-workers, benefits were good

    Cons

I worked at WECC for 12 plus years. The company used to have a lot of good energy and upper management cared about employees and sought employee input. New management is the opposite and has driven out many employees. The current President hired new upper management that had very little energy-efficiency experience. They have driven out the majority of employees that had the expertise and background. It is no surprise that they are now in trouble and losing contracts.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Resign. You have driven out the folks that made WECC great and have now driven the company in to the ground.

    Pros

Used to be a strong passionate company. Still has that energy in it's blood.

    Cons

Current management is lacking foresight and the willingness to create a competitive edge.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Quit. Walk away, let the old WECCies come back and breathe new life into the place.

I have been working at WECC

    Pros

The benefits are fantastic, the schedules are flexible and most of the staff are great to work with. It's also a casual environment.

    Cons

Depending on the position you're in it can be a LOT of work. The company has experienced some growing pains and those in the top two or three positions don't seem as connected or invested as their predecessors.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take the time to get to know staff, take responsibility and slow down those who do the work.
