    Pros

A great deal of responsibility and trust is given to those that are willing to accept it. This approach allows ambitious junior staff to advance according to their own ability and ambition.

    Cons

Training of the junior staff is often left up to the junior staff. Those that are not self motivated will flounder in this environment.

    Advice to Management

Take a closer look at those that are about to be Project Managers. Make sure they are fully aware of risk management theories and practices.

    Pros

    Some nice people. Free soda.

    Cons

Difficult for Admin staff to be taken seriously, particularly women. "Professional staff" can be demanding and demeaning.

    Advice to Management

Develop Admin staff as much as you develop the professionals.

    Pros

Relatively low-stress job. *Most* colleagues were fairly relaxed and down-to-earth. Easy to unplug at the end of the day; admins weren't expected to check email or work from home after hours or on weekends. Pay was decent, as were benefits, and best of all, overtime was compensated. The company was very good about keeping up to date on equipment/technology and also funded some really nice social events for employees.

    Cons

Not really a place to stay for the long haul. Kind of a dead-end for admins. Management acknowledged that they purposely hired very overqualified candidates into admin positions, realizing that in all likelihood such people would get bored/frustrated and leave within a year or two. (Does the receptionist REALLY need to have a college degree? I think not.) The revolving admin door didn't bother corporate; rather, they seemed to embrace it. Yet it is hopelessly inefficient and a loser for everyone. Poll the professional staff and I'm sure they'd say they'd rather have assistants who stick around longer. And the few admins who do stay end up constantly training someone new, whether temp or permanent hire--only to watch said trainee bolt a few short months later.

    Advice to Management

Rethink the admin position and invest in the admin staff. Figure out how to make it a position of growth and opportunity, so the people who actually might want to stay end up staying (hint: incentives). Align the position's qualifications with realities of the job, especially with respect to education requirements, if you want more-productive, more-satisfied workers.

    Pros

You work with an awesome group of people and become very close like family. Benefits are very good, especially during these harsh economical times. You get a very generous bonus at the end of the year. Holiday and summer parties are amazing. The best part is a snack closet stocked very month!

    Cons

Everything and everyone highly depends on the administrative team. The admin team pretty much babies the engineers and architects. Sometimes it feels like there isn't enough of admin people to take care of everyone's needs. My supervisor would contradict herself. She would say one thing but her actions say the opposite.

    Pros

Well equipped with many analytical instruments, expertise and resources; Very knowledgeable and helpful colleagues to work with; Manager is direct, fair, hardworking and respectful, never micro-manages staff or watches out staff over shoulders.

    Cons

Very high target of chargeable rate; have to work extra hours (~55 hours per week) to meet the target.

    Advice to Management

Lower chargeable rate targets, allow more professional development time and nurture a more relaxing and encouraging working environment

    Pros

Very nice people! Everyone is very friendly and genuine

    Cons

Though a top place to work for engineers, not much opportunity for non-engineers. Though this company is very work-life friendly- it is neigh impossible to meet performance standards while enjoying the benefits of flexible scheduling.

    Pros

There are some terrific people there, expertise wise and in terms of knowledge sharing across the various offices. The benefits were very good also.

    Cons

Similar to other reviews, I think the management style seems very outdated. Office managers were for a long time chosen based on technical competence and not at all on management capability and there are many of those type of managers still in place. With all of the expertise present, it is amazing how much sharing is given to people outside of the company, because of fulfillment of a bonus requirement and not to their own people. From what I experienced, there is not a real team culture being fostered, in some offices.

    Advice to Management

I think reviewing the current method of determining ones overall bonus score would be useful. Currently it is heavily weighted on items that do not foster a team culture or a mentoring culture. I believe in the not too distant past engineers used to be trained by the elders in a given company. This is essential for continued success.
