No personal life Ever! Kiss your kids goodbye

Unit Manager (Former Employee)
Atlanta, GA

I worked at Waffle House full-time

ProsRoom for advancement. Also it will teach you a lot about running a business

ConsNeed to allow managers to have a personal life. When you become a unit manager you have a decent salary depending on your sales in your unit but after you look at the amount of hours you work. You hourly rate ends up being maybe $10 an hour and this happen pretty much every week. Forget weekends and holidays with friends and family. Once you agree to Waffle house they own you and they will get their monies worth. Just beware if you join this company. Oh yea kiss your kids goodbye hopefully you will see them before they graduate high school.

Management Trainee

Unit Manager Trainee (Former Employee)

I worked at Waffle House full-time for less than a year

ProsGood training program. Decent pay for management trainees. Free food. Room for advancement.

Cons"Old boys club" mindset in relation to advancements. Sketchy business models; poor upper management; forceful approach to getting results from managers; poor pay for managers if they do not meet their bonuses (even if forces are seriously out of their control); unacceptable and completely poor business model and standards for managers. Managers and trainees are completely overworked, with long and cumbersome hours with very little reward. Bonus program is not stable for high-achieving managers--results with eventually level off for manager, but the higher ups will still get their payout. This is a workplace where you WILL get stuck unless you compromise personal integrity and value.

Advice to Senior ManagementRevamp the entire process. Management trainees were a bit overpaid compared to other employees at the lower levels. Managers should have more time off, and more reward for all of the work you force them to do. Restructure bonus plans so that managers will be more enticed to hygiene standards--you DO realize that your "deposit bonus" is higher than your "sanitation" bonus, right? Disgusting.

A stepping stone

Relief Manager (Current Employee)
Middletown, DE

I have been working at Waffle House full-time for more than a year

ProsMeeting very interesting people (employees & customers), easy advancement and pay raises if one is willing to work a little hard

Cons24 hour restaurant, gossip

Advice to Senior ManagementBe stern, but friendly to the employees. Let them know what they are doing wrong in a reasonable manner. Also, help out the night shift as this company does not have a mandatory overnight differential.

Relief Manager (Current Employee)

Advice to Senior ManagementEmployees are importance, as well as customers.

Unit Manager

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Waffle House

ProsThey are good with promoting from within and rewarding the individuals for doing a great job. Bonuses are pretty nice if you run good numbers and be cheap with operating expenses.

ConsWow I can go on and on. The associates are so unprofessional and really don't care at all, but you are in a lose lose situation because if you fire them you wont get your people quota bonus and will be short staffed. As a unit manager you will be the taxi, referee, counselor, maintenance man, punching bag, custodian, and any other thing thats required. This position is a disgrace to anyone with a bachelor's degree. Also, if you are family oriented please kiss those events goodbye. You are required to work all holidays. I worked 15 plus hours on Christmas because my second shift could not handle the volume. If you are in need of a job and dont really have family, friends, and no life this job is for you. I would advise anyone to stay so far away from this company.

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease hire an assistant manager or at least get a shift leader. It is impossible for one person to run a 24/7 365 business.
