Pros
Good on the job training .
Strong Processes
Best inventory management in the world
Cons
low work life balance.
lots of physical work because of lack of material handling equipment
too much inventory.
change is the only permanent thing at wal-mart
exhausting
Advice to Senior Management
be more practical
do not take knee jerk reaction instead of thought over descion making
Pros
Relatively Stress Free, friendly conditions, no pressure to work extra hours. Salary is decent for work performed and the overtime is there once a month on holidays. We do get paid for every extra minute on the clock, contrary to popular beliefs. Work and extra 30 minutes per week and you get paid for same. Every minute over 8 hours per shift or over 40 hours per week is paid as overtime. Easy to check your pay against the time clock if you know how. Stock purchase plan is very good. Company adds 15% to the first $2,800 you buy each year so that is like a bonus and if you are in the company long enough it will sure add up. Spouse has almost 30 years in and it does pay off.
Cons
limited potential for growth due to age and if they promote you, then they have to replace you and if you do a fine job, they want you to stay put.
Advice to Senior Management
Give a little more praise to those who deserve it and treat the slackers appropriately
Pros
If you want to learn the retail business, from operations to sales and customer service, Wal-Mart Canada is second to none. It's the best place to prepare for a career in retail.
Cons
No compassion for family emergencies. No feedback on job performance = many "surprises". Poor communication between home offices and store management
Advice to Senior Management
Listen to your employees. Take grass roots meetings seriously, have more listening sessions with management across the country in addition to YBM. Mario was very good at living the culture on a daily basis. David as well as all levels of management must share his passion for what happens at every level of the company.
