Advice to Senior Management
walgreen's has to fire there CEO that's bringing this company down. And fine some one that is more human and understanding about how important the assistant managers, photo tech ,and stock people are.
Pros
They pay on average higher than most retail settings.
Cons
There few advancement options and opportunities without having to relocate
Pros
Discount, but that's about it.
Cons
Opportunity for advancement is almost non-existent. Year after year they cancel EXA class, which is the only way to get promoted once your an assistant manager. You can be a terrible assistant or exa and never have to worry about being fired.
Advice to Senior Management
Take a harder look at all your employees, not just the ones you "like." Approach all employees regardless of their position. They are the ones working the front line and deserve respect.
Pros
The ability to work with different management teams via store transfers, learning vendor relations at store level, making strong connections throughout store level management
Cons
Some instances of scheduling that result in employee burnout, lack of involvement between store level and corporate level management regarding important issues, distrust of store employees by store management, some instances of unfair scheduling and unethical behaviors, and a lack of opportunities for advancement.
Advice to Senior Management
I feel that management needs to focus on important issues instead of looking for insignificant things at store level. Another area that I feel needs attention is the ability of management to listen to employees and be willing to try new ideas. The understanding that employees are not unintelligent could greatly benefit the company's operations. The bottom line is ultimately what brings in sales, maintains customer loyalty, and many other areas that sometimes get overlooked by management.
Pros
-Great customer service experience. You will be able to deal with any kind of person after this job.
-Great retail experience. You basically learn how to run a store. It's like everyone is in charge because the store is so small and you do everything.
-Great benefits. Walgreens provides great benefits for full time employees. A lot of service clerks don't take advantage of them.
-A lot of hours, you receive and maintain a lot of hours unless you want less.
Cons
-Low compensation. Service clerks are not paid enough for all that they go through everyday. Minimum wage is not enough. No one is clear about how raises are distributed. Everyone is always stating that they're underpaid, unless they've worked there for several years.
-No outside life. Working at Walgreens 40 hours a week is a drag to say the least. The store hours are your living hours. 3:30-11:30pm. 12-8pm. It takes about 6 months to get some 8am-4pm shifts but even those are a drag. When you're off from work all you want to do is sleep if you don't have plans already. You have seniority if you get your two days off in a row.
-Lack of communication between employees and management. Management only cared about everyone being able to work and work hard. There was little communication about company news and such. We never had any type of meetings. The only way you'd know anything is by gossiping with your coworkers.
-Customers will drive you crazy. There are many regular local shoppers and elderly shoppers. It's a quick stop drugstore so be prepared to deal with craziness.
-Not much room for growth within the company. If you are promoted to say beauty advisor or photo tech, it's informally done and you may never see a raise unless you're there for years and you demand it.
Advice to Senior Management
Allow all employees to be knowledgable of everything going on. Even brief meetings would be highly effective. We don't have time to read that little post-it on the time clock. We have to get to our slave shift.
Pros
Working for Walgreens gives me flexibility in job location, the company is doing well, and there is room for advancement.
Cons
Any job in the service industry requires weekend and evening work. Dealing with the general public can be a challenge.
Advice to Senior Management
Offer a more regular schedule for cashiers and other non-management employees. Create schedules further in advance. Continue offering training opportunities for advancement.
Pros
Even in tough economic times, Walgreens continues to create jobs and promote. The offer room to grow, and mentoring from management is available as well.
Cons
All warehouse positions are same rate of pay. This allows people to work in other areas with out having to adjust pay.
Advice to Senior Management
Good management, with a lot of experience. Each manager that I work with brings something different and unique to the table.
Pros
employee interaction, management involvement, family like atmosphere.
Cons
promotions, raises once a year.
Pros
Very fair to all employees and treats each with respect and dignity. If you want extra work, it is available. If you do not you do not have to work extra.
Cons
The only downside is when it comes to getting vacation time because it goes by seniority which if you are new can be difficult.
Advice to Senior Management
Be a little more attentive and have more of a presence on the floor even though you do a good job running the warehouse.
Pros
Large company with many opportunties
Cons
How they grandfather people in the company
