-profit sharing
-health & dental insurance
-fair pay
In 6 yrs I went from cashier (service clerk) to photo tech to beauty advisor to head photo tech to sims to stl to mgt. They train their people well.
Cons
Stupid lanyard name tag.. I almost got chocked from mine at least 3 times last week alone. And no formal uniform.. when I started we wore vests then 2 yrs later it switched to W blue polos.. now people can wear whatever blue shirts they want - they look sloppy!
Pros
Team mindset. You feel like you're part of a bigger whole, more so than at other places of employment.
Cons
Some of the pharmacy computer outages and glitches suck and really slow down your progress in the work place. Patches from corporate are slow in coming.
Advice to Senior Management
Fix the computer glitches in the pharmacy software.
Pros
A good place to work if you are young and wanting to pursue a career in retail. If you are there long enough you may have the opportunity to become a manager, however this may take several years. If you are a people person you will enjoy working here.
Cons
Management seemed to lack leadership, organization and teamwork abilities. You must deal with very rude customers.
Advice to Senior Management
Work as a team more than as an individual.
Pros
As a 10yr employee, its hard to make a decision to leave your company. There are OK benefits (insurance, vacation, sick pay, stock options, etc.) and store level its great (employees and management) but the corporate side of the business is what drove me to search the job postings.
Cons
A new employee might not notice anything wrong with Walgreens, but for me I am sick of having everything cut to save corporate money. I understand they need to continue to make profit and that was near impossible in the recession, but Walgreens managed it! We all took the cuts in stride, knowing this corporation needed to cut corners to make their money. Makes sense. After a few years, I hoped all the cuts would stop, or even a few reversed. But no, the cuts continue. Walgreens continually asks for more and more with less and less. They have cut hours, positions, bonuses, incentives & contests, even products from the shelves. And through all the cuts they ask for more sales, customers, compliments ALL OF IT! I have no problem serving my customers with a smile and spending time helping them but this is near impossible with the hours and amount of people we have running the store at one time. The pharmacy is the worst. In some of the slower stores a pharmacist works ALONE with no tech help. In a rush, how is this pharmacist going to provide A+ customer service and patient interactions. The customers HAVE noticed, and I believe the business WILL suffer because of this. This was NEVER a problem about 3-4 years ago. Over the years I have slowly started to realize that although we are heading out of the "recession" Walgreens has NO plans on putting back into the stores what they took out. This causes me to really resent my place of work and plan on finding somewhere new.
Advice to Senior Management
To corporate: show your employees in the stores how important they are. Even ONE generous act on your part (a Xmas bonus, and extra day of pay, etc) as a thank you for hanging in during the bad times will help morale GREATLY. This is long overdue, Greg and Mark.
Pros
Flexible scheduling, paid time off, sick days, insurance, profit sharing, family friendly, overall it's a good place to work and management is usually good
Cons
Retail job with retail pay, so you get weird hours and the pay isn't much to speak of unless you're in management, working either Thanksgiving of Christmas Day
Advice to Senior Management
My managers have been great, others I've met have been great, the company is really family friendly and offers good perks for retail.
Pros
chill, works around schedule, mgmt was nice
Cons
closing sucks, customers are dumb sometimes
Advice to Senior Management
theyre mostly on your side, store manager was a cool dude
Pros
I would only recommend working at walgreens if if you are absolutely desperate, or perhaps if you are a retiree looking for part-time work to keep you busy.
Cons
as with any retail job you are subject to dealing with occasionally irrate and generally rude customers. management pushes for excellent customer service yet has no regard for the well being of their employees. as a service clerk you will be expected to do a lot of mindless work at irregular shifts with long hours for minimum wage. do not expect to get promoted unless you become best friends with the store manager. also, if you get laid-off don't expect to recieve unmeployment benefits, walgreens will fight you tooth and nail over them.
Advice to Senior Management
treat your employees as well as you treat your customers. give employees positive feedback, not just negative. don't play favorites and only promote brown nosers and the people you are friendly with.
Pros
Close to my house. This is honestly the only advantage...took me 5-10 minutes to get to work but I think I was lucky. Not everyone shares that experience.
Cons
If you're thinking about a job just to have a job - Walgreens is ok.
If you want a serious and rewarding career - RUN AWAY FROM WAG! Absolutely nothing positive has happened with this company in the last five years. They are a company beholden to wall street and nothing comes between that - even the lives of the workers they abuse.
Advice to Senior Management
Start caring about your employees as much as you care about wall street. Do not lie to your assistant managers guaranteeing them overtime pay and then snake it away without even so much as a thought about how it would affect those people.
Pros
flexible work schedules
friendly atmosphere
laid back attire
mgt became friendly
Cons
long shifts.
covering breaks
breaks were usually short and someone has to always cover you
