I worked at Walgreens full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

I enjoyed the people I worked with - very supportive, smart and hard working. Good opportunites for growth and development.

    Cons

I think the culture has changed over the last few years. There seems to be less focus on employees and making this company a great place to work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus more on making sure you have the right people in key positions; good people are always the key to any successful organization. Always. Treat your employees with respect.

I have been working at Walgreens full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

It's hard to get fired. You'll be let go with severance. One work from home day. Healthy Living Center.

    Cons

Little work life balance. No recognition. No employee engagement. No room for growth. You're just a number. Vacation after 11 years is equivalent to what you would get starting with a different company. Horrible managers. No career development. Horrible new hire training.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change all of this...Little work life balance. No recognition. No employee engagement. No room for growth. You're just a number. Vacation after 11 years is equivalent to what you would get starting with a different company. Horrible managers. No career development. Horrible new hire training.

    Pros

Strong company which is making an effort to evolve and grow its core business.

    Cons

Management doesn't have much appreciation of employees; attitude is that everyone is easily replaceable so deal with it or leave. Lots of positions have been eliminated with the same amount of work to be handled by fewer and fewer people.

Walgreens is a good place to work for, but there seems to be some age discrimination.

I have been working at Walgreens as a contractor for more than 3 years

    Pros

Personal growth in learning how to space plan a retail store including learning about the pharmacy, stock room, sales floors, employee rooms, etc. Learn a lot of ADA clearances needed for different areas.

    Cons

Competing with a younger audience with less experience. It seems like there are a lot of younger people that work there that have some type of ethnicity.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat people like you would want to be treated. Older people 40 and up, usually have a lot to offer too.

I have been working at Walgreens full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

The best thing about working for Walgreens was work-life balance. I rarely had to stay late or work over a weekend. Although there were many things about Walgreens I did not like, I always tried to keep in mind that, the majority of the time, I was out the door by 5pm and once I left on a Friday, I did not think of the office again until I returned on Monday morning.

    Cons

Over the last couple of years, Walgreens has been making serious efforts to "modernize" it's corporate culture. Instead of selecting senior managers from the pool of "lifers" hanging around Deerfield, they hired a lot of execs from consulting firms and other companies. However, I think it will take a loonngg time before the "new blood" works it's way through the company. In the meantime, you still need to work with people who should have been let go years ago instead of being promoted into positions of responsibility simply because of their longevity and/or political connections.
