    Pros

WalkerCom is a long standing staple in the Pearland community providing business to business telecommunication installations and repairs to not only local customers but NATIONWIDE! WalkerCom is devoted to customer satisfaction. WalkerCom strives for successful implementations on every call. WalkerCom is a family owned operation and that family environment is reflected in building relationships with customers for life and provides flexibility for staff members which is a great attribute to balancing work demands and family obligations. WalkerCom provided an a wonderful opportunity to learn the value in customer service, the importance of proper business ethics and practices and set the path for me to grown into a new role and opportunity. Without WalkerCom I cannot say that I would be where I am now-successful!

    Cons

No room for advancement. WalkerCom is not a large operation and there truly is no room to "climb the ladder" however through devotion and effort you can be successful!

    Pros

The company has a 45 year reputation within the telecommunications industry for loyalty to it's customers and manufacturers.

    Cons

Has a long decision making process that tends to lead to atrophy and last minute decisions.

    Advice to Management

There is a need to infuse new ways to motivate and stimulate a compliant workforce to think and act outside of just getting their job done. Compensation plans need to be simplified and reward needs to be greater over 100%. Skills training is essential in everyday work tools to be more efficient. Need to invest in the workforce to develop new skills and strengthen industry knowledge and trends.

    Pros

always paid on time and never shorted on paycheck. owners were always very trustworthy on payroll and corrected any mistakes made right away. most of this companies profits go right back to the employees in the form of a paycheck. It is a family run company and pretty much has a casual ,laid back office environment. Meetings are held quite often to keep employees well informed in what is taking place within the company as the company is going thru a downsizing phase at this time.

    Cons

Not strict overseeing or management of co-workers, many were allowed breaks whenever they felt like it: re:smoking & outside phone calls . Leaving early was common with some employees and they were never disciplined for this behavior because it continued to go on every day with some. Better communication from upper management as to your job description is very much needed as your job position can change quite frequently with this company.

    Advice to Management

Give the employees and overall office a moral boost by frequently communicating a positive out look for the company and not such a dismal future.

    Pros

Really none other than it would be a pay check although a much lower one then the standard for your skill sets would be at any other company in town and you'd never get a raise

    Cons

All ownership thinks about is how to put money in his pocket and could care less about you or your life or if him getting more in his pocket cost you money out of yours. They will lie, cheat and tell you anything you want to hear to get what he wants right then and then won't admit anything when confronted about his promises. I've watch this company go from about 30 good employees to 6 who are only there because they'll work cheap and let him abuse them. This ship is going down fast and one day soon the remaining employees will come to work and find a note on the door saying " CLOSED GOOD LUCK GETTING YOUR LAST CHECK" This clown doesn't even have any sales staff a doesn't have the brains to figure out why he doesn't have any new sales.

    Advice to Management

Learn how to run a company in todays world, learn how to stop taking all the company profits and funneling them into you personal projects rather then back into the company and your employees who make you your money, learn to take care of and treat the people who make you your money, learn the meaning of loyalty to employees who stand by you if you ever have any again. And most of all learn how to treat people as more than a tool to used, abused then thrown away like trash when your done with them.

    Pros

    There are none to list.

    Cons

I was employed with WalkerCom for over 2 years, and during that time noticed high turnover, unhappy employees, and no leadership. It’s sad to see a company that had an opportunity to do more, but strangled itself from within. The Owner Richard Gonzales holds a tight grip on growth to keep the company small and controlled. Watch out if you get on his bad side as you may be terminated without notice and walked out by one of his grunts. Bill Rogers VP-Operations tends to fly off the handle, curse, and yell - the kind of leadership you tend to look up to (Not!). Cameras align the whole building watching your every move, I felt as if I was being filmed for the next episode of Big Brother. If you are hired as a salaried employee, you are expected to work 45-55 hours a week with no compensation for overtime. Hourly folks tend to get cut when business slows or forced to go contract. Training was a joke for all techs; Richard expects you to sign a contract where you will owe him up to $20,000 from training on company time if you should leave the company. And make sure to use all of your vacation time before you terminate your employment as they tend to short that last pay check of unused vacation time.

    Pros

The company is very much small and family owned; the office is business casual and the employee interaction, with the exception of customer and business meetings, is informal and lax. Aside from the technicians, most positions work standard 8 to 5 hours. Lunch is typically served once a week for "lunch and learn" sessions - which range from internal process changes to new product exposure/training. WalkerCom dabbles in a little bit of everything telecom/data, so chances are that you will gain a lot of exposure to different vertical and horizontal business areas and product lines.

    Cons

It is not typical to receive a finite "job description" upon being hired or at any time during employment. You will most likely be expected to fulfill multiple roles - especially in the operations department. Technicians are expected to become proficient across multiple PBX platforms rather quickly and with little incentive, and are often run ragged with long work weeks and crazy travel schedules. The sales department is heavily micromanaged - and not in a good way. Most positions experience a "glass ceiling" effect after only a few years of employment. All training is expected to be done on ones' own time. Individuals not previously exposed to this industry will find it very difficult to grasp many of these telecom concepts, product offerings, and general internal organizational flow. To aid with the problem, much of the staff is typically not interested or too busy to really sit down and offer one-on-one training which can be incredibly beneficial - not just for the individual, but for the organization as a whole.

    Advice to Management

Negative-reinforced management is not the right way to go. Invest in your employees, work with them to develop their skills, and make them feel valued. Skills and expertise are not easily traded commodities; figure out why turnover is an issue and aim to resolve this. There should be a push to better resolve internal conflicts between departments, increase employee morale, and create a better overall culture. There is a huge cost associated with constantly re-initiating, offering guidance, or offering training for a new employee; employee retention is in the best interest of the company. You cannot benchmark performance if you're constantly changing your goals and methodologies. WalkerCom needs to do proper market research before initiating a change in direction, allow for that change to evolve and grow for a long enough time for it to be analyzed, and move from there; the monthly "throw spaghetti at the wall and see if it sticks" method is not a good sales strategy - again, investment (on development).

    Pros

By showing eagerness to learn I was given the chance to learn hands on with senior employees who are willing. Provide access to online classes and occasional in office time to train, otherwise hands on training. Company seems to be keeping up with the changing trends and have engaged the staff to offer input. Company provides company cars too, which is a big plus with gas prices now days.

    Cons

Some occasional travel, but typically had advance notice to make personal arrangements with my family.
