Pros
Pros: Constant recognition for good performance (sometimes it's a bit much at times). Easy to move up if you're smarter than the average Joe. Most have worked their way up from the stores and aren't as corporate savvy.
Senior Management is very hands on and you get alot of facetime with them. They definitely practice what they preach.
Cons
Even though they talk a big game about work/life balance- the work week is a mandatory 45 hours at Corporate and you usually work more than 60 a week to keep up. It is stressful and at times somewhat like a sweatshop. If you're not a white/Christian/corn-fed mid-westerner or southener...you will feel VERY out of place. The company is ultra cheap - to the point of making you buy your own office supplies.
Advice to Senior Management
Share more of the financial details of the company with your employees.
Pros
I love the management work schedule. If you work hard, there is room for growth and promotion. I would recommend Walmart to my friends.
Cons
It is a retail industry. The stress and pressures around the holiday season are great. Continual pressure to get the work complete.
Pros
It was and is still a very good company. The 10% discount used to help especially right before pay day.
Cons
The benifit program, from what I understand, has disappeared. If you are a new hire you must start part time.
Advice to Senior Management
Bring back the days of starting at full time status. Pay your employees better and you will get better results.
Pros
Stable in economic slowdown
Fast pace
Always something to learn and grow in
Sam Walton was a great man
Cons
Since Sam Walton's death marked the demise of a great company founded on the morals and self worth of all. Not a head hunting blame game.
Advice to Senior Management
Do your job. Do it well. People will respect and follow.
Pros
A lot of positive interaction with people in the community.
Meeting travelers of all ages from all over the world.
Working with people from different backgrounds and learning from others experiences in life.
Cons
Too many managers with different opinions on how to handle situations.
Asking for a solution to a job-related dilemma and getting the run around
.
Advice to Senior Management
Have periodic meetings with employees with opportunity for feedback and listen to their comments. You might even consider a suggestion box. Wouldn't it be great if we could actually make Walmart a fun place to work?
Pros
High turnover allows growth opportunities where new store growth opportunities are not available.
Cons
Inconsistant enforcment of policies. They take full advantage of the term "at will employment" and are more concerned with diversity than finding the best person for the job.
Advice to Senior Management
watch you back.
Pros
direct hands-on experience on the first day.
plenty of career advancement and career path opportunities.
supportive bosses.
Cons
low pay, bad medical benefit, mediocre vacation days (can't be carried over to the next year), NWA location, not enough on-board training, shoot things at "retail speed" and not allowing enough time to aim!!
Advice to Senior Management
Diversity is important. We are so good at executing. but there are only a few who have true vision. Promotions should be given to those who have excellent performance AND intellectual qualification.
Pros
Stable environment, great atmosphere, promotion opportunites are available for everyone
Cons
hiring outside of the company
Advice to Senior Management
listen to your assocate more and provide feedback when asked
Pros
Can advance from Associate to Management (Assistant Manager) as fast as you are capable. After that things slow down and pressure from upper management increases.
Cons
Assistant Mangers are caught between Associates and upper management. Little to no support from upper management, but unending demands to improve performance. On any question or claim you do not receive any benefit of the doubt, because all management above you wants to do is to protect their job.
Advice to Senior Management
Support and loyalty goes both ways. Do not just try to placate the next level of management above you. Try to be a real manager and defend those under you, if they are deserving.
Pros
VERY Easy to get hired.
Cons
In my opinion, management focuses to much on aquiring their bonus rather than sticking to the principles promoted by Sam Walton.
Advice to Senior Management
Put more efforet into practicing the principle of sharing Walmart's economic prosperity with the workers because the workers are the foundation of the store. Cutting the workers hours in half two months before the end of the fiscal year in order to falsely show a decrease in operating costs,(which qualifies management for a substantial bonus) is unethical and deceptive. Expecially when this practice makes it difficult for the employees to pay their rent.
