Pros
Walmart isn't going anywhere and neither is the overnight crew. If you need a stable job and steady paycheck then working overnight at Walmart can provide this for as long as you can work. Most salaried managers are very well trained in retail and leadership strategy and can pass that along to you as well. Lots of room to advance into management if your willing to work hard, play by the rules, be creative, and make the best of every situation. Benefits for full time associates are pretty good and include health, cancer coverage, HSA, dental, vision, life, AD+D, STD, LTD, 401K (full company match), 100s of discounts nationwide on everything from your cell phone to rental cars to hotel rooms, personal time (2 days yearly), paid holidays (5 per year), paid vacations (1 week at one year, 2 weeks at 3 years, 3 weeks at 5 years, 4 weeks at 7 years and then your maxed out), quarterly profit sharing bonus and more.
Cons
Working third shift (overnights) is hard work. Expectations are very high. Management demands the best you can possibly do every day, no excuses, end of story. This can seem like slave driving but at the end of the day its for the best. When we all work hard as a whole-store team the results are incredible and that is reflected in your sales and customer satisfaction and later in your profit sharing bonus. Benefits aren't very good for part time associates and can it takes to two years of employment to earn 1 weeks paid vacation per year.
Advice to Senior Management
If someone is having a bad day, back off. No one can be 100% every single time they work every day without excuse. Life happens to everyone, not just those who don't work for Walmart. "Striving for excellence" does not mean "crack the whip". Inspire instead of threaten. Lead your people: it's what they want and expect from the companies LEADership. Stop playing favorites when promotions come around ... everyone who is equally qualified should get an equal chance, not just the guy you went fishing with last weekend.
Pros
The company is stable and will be around for years to come. Many associates become close and develop lasting friendships.
Cons
The company is so concerned about law suits, that compassion and logic seem to be lacking at times. They have developed an effective method of terminating an associate for whatever reason they choose.
Advice to Senior Management
Recover the heart and soul that Sam Walton founded and instilled in his associates of true respect for the individual and their families.
Pros
Ability to make a big impact. Culture. Responsibility. Big projects. Big exposure. Big potential.
Cons
Low entry-level pay. Not competitive in this category, company loses a lot of top engineering talent because of it. Simply raising the entry-level pay would do a lot for their company's recruiting and talent base in the future.
Pros
Salary is unmatched. Made a killing
Cons
Hours are horrible. 80 hours a week
Advice to Senior Management
Run lots of money but no life
Pros
Most area managers have respect for their associates
Cons
Poor choices made when giving promotiins
Advice to Senior Management
Promote based on skills and not on how well a person does in a behavioral inrerview
Pros
Interesting experiences and coworkers
Get money
Good first job
Don't expect too much
Some locations can be much better than others
Cons
Pays not great, not a fantastic long term job
Depending on your boss, can be a great or miserable experience
Advice to Senior Management
Should train sales associates to be managers internally rather than recruiting to that level externally, makes employees lose motivation otherwise
Pros
Everyone hates Wal-Mart, but honestly, it is not a bad company to work for. The individuals that work there become a family, and the company does believe in work/life balance. The competence and fairness of your leadership within your facility will determine your happiness within the company.
Cons
The company does lack decent healthcare benefits, but that is to be expected in this economy. Secondly, the company is so large that it is easy to get lost in the shuffle.
Advice to Senior Management
The morale, over all, appears to be up. However, some associates are scared of the direction of the company. It might help to appease associates.
