Pros
You will learn a lot working at Walmart. Things change fast and they are always looking to improve things. They don't skimp when it comes to making investments to improve producitivity by adding new hardware and software. One thing for certain, change is guaranteed. So if you don't like change, you will not like it there.
Cons
You work a lot of hours and very hard and often get little recognition for your hard work. The culture that Walmart refers to is primarly that of the hourly associate. Management culture is sometimes very destructive - dog eat dog. In general your base rate will not be near that in the industry. It was not uncommon for a direct report to make more than their boss.
Advice to Senior Management
It is an incredible work experience and it is a great place to learn a lot. But if you are afraid of digging in and getting your hands dirty and working hard, this is not the place for you. It can be a long term career with many options, but you have to pretty much give your life to the company. And be prepared to be upset when your direct report is making more than you.
Pros
Meeting Different People on a day to day basis.
Cons
Work Hours in the excess of 55 per week
Advice to Senior Management
Always keep listening to the employees!
Pros
best job in the store, 10% employee discount, good experience working on cars,
Cons
management doesnt know enough about automotive or mechanical to be bossing around shop supervisor
Advice to Senior Management
stay in gm or grocery let a manager that knows what is under a hood over see the shop
Pros
They do have competitive wages, which is really great to start out making a bit more. They tend to let you have days off, if you ask ahead of time. Some of the people are really nice and will treat you well.
Cons
Raises are basically non-existent. They sometimes forget that your trying to do a good job, but never forget if you mess-up. Moving up in this company takes a lot of time. Some of my managers were really good people, but the floor managers are a different story. The customers do tend to treat you bad, but I never really let them bother me.
Advice to Senior Management
Some of the upper management needs to replace the lower management. I think that would solve most of the problems.
Pros
well, I guess the is can be summed up at what management says when we ask for more hours or complain about the cuts, "just be glad you have a job."
Cons
part time hours, poor benefits, understaffed, management just plays the blame game...pointing the finger at home office for the under staffing. Hours should be controlled by the store, not home office where they have no idea of our customer demands..
Advice to Senior Management
Management needs to stand up to home office and have more hours budgeted for their stores so their customers can be taken care of and the associates can have more hours...
Pros
Unlimited hours, OK people to work with
Cons
limited possibilities for advancement in company
Advice to Senior Management
Look at your employees and place yourself in their shoes when making a decision.
Pros
-A great deal of exposure and experience for someone straight out of college.
-Quite a few mentors available, if you're willing to initiate.
-The ability to change areas every 18 months.
-Large, complex systems offer a steep learning curve but sets you apart from your small company counterparts.
Walmart has been a good first job for me. I've been exposed to some of the largest systems in the world in an organization that is seemingly always changing to try to keep its head above water. There is no doubt that when I go to interview for my next job, I'll have plenty to talk about.
Cons
-Resources are constrained to the point that the company can only be reactive, it seems like a white-knuckle ride most of the time. Not enough time or labor resources to be proactive and innovative.
-Paperwork and processes dominate here, which is also a pro since it instills discipline.
-Long working hours, 45 hours minimum. Special projects will push you to 60+, comp time is not guaranteed.
-Compensation is below average, many former interns(I was a previous intern) did not come back due to being offered 10% to 15% more. Recruiters will try to sell you on the bonus, but it's not guaranteed.
-Dismal vacation benefits, 5 days per year for entry-level.
-Very dull location. Compounds with poor vacation benefits, depression/loneliness ensues. Appears to be great for families but absolutely not for a young single person.
-Employees are resources, nothing more. Don't expect special treatment.
While Walmart has been a good experience for me, I'm honestly not happy here. As a returning intern, I signed paperwork to return to the area I interned in. On my first day, I was told that was no longer the case and I had been transferred elsewhere. I had no say in this decision even though it was known to Walmart well in advance. My new position is not inline with my career goals, i.e. working on a niche system with few external career opportunities. Northwest Arkansas is a complete bore. Coming from a liberal college town, I find there to be a complete lack of culture here. It seems that there are only families here and the only young people here are married. It's a very frustrating situation. I figure I'll do my time and then go find a better life fit.
Advice to Senior Management
While I understand Walmart operates in a very competitive retail climate, more resources are needed at ISD. We do not have the capacity to adequately design or get out ahead of change, the organization ultimately pays for this when things break catastrophically. There is no excuse for a team to be down 25% of its people for a year, especially when you have a stack of resumes.
Pros
They best reson to work for walmart is that you may get a scholarship if your in schedule and the work schedule is pretty flexible.
Cons
Management show a lot of favoritism. Managers have too many responsibilities so is hard to get time to talk about issues
Advice to Senior Management
Hire more managers so that when employees need issues resolved we dont have to be given the run around about finding our supervisor or assistant manager
Pros
Good Benefits and some of the peolpe
Cons
When hours are cut more work fell onto the Assistant Managers. I pushed more frieght than I learned about the operations of the company.
Advice to Senior Management
N/A
Pros
I would say it's very easy work, you receive a %10 discount on general merchandise, most of the people you work with in your department are friendly
Cons
-clueless management on all levels
-pay raises are a joke
-take away employee incentives (they used to give semi-annual raises, also "good Job buttons" -which you could trade in for stock.
-consistently cutting hours
-no coverage in areas
-don't receive allotted breaks most of the time
-no accountability with management
Advice to Senior Management
listen to employees, we know whats going on on the sales floor, STAFF people!!!!
