Nashville, TN

Current Employee – been working at Walmart Stores full-time for more than 10 years

ProsGreat management training programs now, despite growing pains in the past decade. They have a diverse group in their management, which is an asset to the communities in which they have stores. The experience of the management staff is sometimes lacking, but there are pockets of management out there that don't simply manage, but lead.

ConsThe "there is ample opportunity for everyone" mantra is a fallacy. Despite balancing work, school, and a family for three years to get both my bachelors in management and masters in business administration, the ROI on these degrees is 0% from Walmart. It is my opinion that they value diversity much more over education and experience. With nearly 10 years in management for them with an education to back it, and having applied for nearly 75 promotions, and sadly, I have only had 4 interviews for promotion. Each of these were given to a female or minority with less education and less experience. It's a no win situation, because who am I to fault them with their logic? If I were in the role of HR manager and I had candidates that had similar experience and education, I would pick the female or the minority candidate. In the first few interviews, I agreed with their decision, because I had not degree. In the last two decisions they made, I was simply an "also ran".

Advice to Senior ManagementDetails. The transparency from the home office is getting clearer by the minute. My experience in management has been that many in management simply get by with the help of their fellow managers. This is no longer the case. Now, with so much emphasis on performance, it's either lead well or get out of the way.

Tempe, AZ

Former Employee – worked at Walmart Stores full-time for less than a year

ProsLots of work, lots of unloading of freight, great exercise, fun people, great learning experience, easy job, the bakery is the best!

Consthe only thing i didn't like about working at walmart was there are just way to many managers to deal with and they suck at communicating new rules and policies to each other, one day we could do said thing, and the next day we couldn't any longer even though one said we could then another one would turn around and say something different.

Advice to Senior ManagementLearn to communicate rule and policies between managers more efficiently as to now confuse associates.

Current Employee – been working at Walmart Stores full-time for more than 10 years

ProsCan be a great company to work for, but it entirely depends on the store management team and how well engaged the associates are. Best perks of the job include excellent work schedule, 3 on 3 off. Vacation depends on seniority, up to 4 weeks off a year after 15 years. Matching 401k, decent health insurance, stock purchase program, decent bonus potential, a lot of room to grow within the company

ConsSome store management teams are tight-knit families with strong personalities that balance each other, some are just emotional boat anchors. Your experience will depend a lot on the store management team, the associate engagement, and your personal level of emotional and stress tolerance.

Advice to Senior ManagementChoose a program and stay with it for a while. Try to keep SOPs and policies updated so they do not conflict with each other.
