I have been working at Walt Disney Imagineering full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Audacious, ambitious projects. Wide variety of talent.

    Cons

Lots of old timers. Very old ways of thinking, old tools. Very hard to change decades-old methodologies. Plenty of folks waiting around to retire.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Move forward. Turnover may not be a bad thing.

I worked at Walt Disney Imagineering full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    - High energy, talented people.
    - Inspirational projects which vary widely in duration, budget, type, and theme.
    - On the forefront of Exploring New Project Management Organization
    - Lots of group parties, activities, and events.
    - Very interdependent work environment. Employees receive very little oversight.

    Cons

    - Very compartmentalized culture. Lots of talk of mixing talent, but no action.
    - Lots of unspoken politics. Large latent culture of shaming and avoidance of failure.
    - Limited to no time for self development or work life balance.
    - Very conservative culture. No talk of telecommuting or challenging traditional assumptions.
    - Very reluctant to empower employees to make changes and request resources.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Walk your talk, build a safe environment for failure, trust your associates, encourage dissent.

Most Interesting and rewarding work but too slow moving with entrenched people and processes.

I worked at Walt Disney Imagineering full-time

    Pros

    - Great product you can be proud to tell your friends and family about
    - Immensely creative and talented people (mostly)
    - Great combination of hard work and fun work
    - Friendly office culture with many formal and informal team celebrations
    - Great work life balance if you are proactive at managing your project load (with the occasional all hands on deck deadline)
    - Decent pay for a job most would do for free
    - Great resume builder and ability to build unique skills
    - Clear goals and values initiated at the top with direct links to the work at every level

    Cons

    - The allure of the job means most people never leave, advancement opportunities are limited and favor tenure over merit. It can feel a bit like waiting in line at Disneyland... but for years not hours
    - Talk about developing/retaining talent trumped with many outside hires at mid/high level positions reducing further advancement opportunities from within
    - Slow moving decision making and processes can suck the life out of a project/team/individual
    - Weak on performance management, very little actionable development feedback given. Slow to pull trigger on letting under performing employees go
    - Weak in long term resource planning and endured waves of head count reductions every couple years only to staff up again

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The slow transition away from the old way of working to a more nimble and dynamically scaleable workforce is painful, both for existing employees who question the stability of their job, and the new staff who are not sure how they fit into the organization and processes. Take risks and make step changes with well reasoned hypotheses, rather than incremental changes which feels like a slow pull on a band-aid. Do not assume that the existing middle managers and leadership are suited to lead this transition.

I worked at Walt Disney Imagineering as a contractor for more than a year

    Pros

Being able to do what I love.

    Cons

The work environment . Allowing bad behavior of those over you to not be addressed. Very back stabbing . It was a great place to work, nice amenities but stressful where it wasn't necessary . Lack of respect for your background and ability. Tiered work non-employee vs employee feels like lower class citizens. They have a system of Green and Blue cards. Green is Get laid off at any time ,no benefits no future........

I worked at Walt Disney Imagineering full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Amazing work, very talented people, and lots of community events.

    Cons

Management is terrible. They don't care if you have to stay late or come in on the weekend. You get it done.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Office politics ruined my experience. Higher more people instead of piling more work onto the one's that are already there. People have families and they're missing their kids grow up because working 16 hours is the norm.

I worked at Walt Disney Imagineering full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Immense, City-scale greenfield international projects. Brlliant creative opportunities abound for making the world a better place, and most significantly, creating unequalled shareholder value. Historically very generous benefits. Training is by on the job immersion, sometimes through ad-hoc mentoring by veterans. Still kindles a spark of the original can-do organization founded by Walt.

    Cons

Work-Life balance favors Imagineering's projects and the bloated portfolio leadership. If not among the "chosen" expect long hours of uncompensated extra work hours, an unrealistic workload and an over-burdened but indecisive project delivery framework. Limited opportunity for advancement or recognition unless an annointed Insider. Chronic fear of failure drives committee formatted re-thinking that eventually dilutes the product while inflating costs, and thus constrains shareholder value. Performance review process is murky and arbitrary, essentailly a black hole. Compensation, Incentives (Bonus rewards) and Promitions favor friends and off hour social cronies. Toxic office culture embraces political favoritism and not best practices, squadering tens of millions in shareholder value.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Advice to current management at WDI: Take your early retirements and cash in your stock. The TWDC must then turn the company over to a genuinely open-minded, highly qualified innovator with a verifiable executive leadership history, having produced unrivalled shreholder value in a major Fortune 500 company. This leader must come from outside Imagineering, insiders are incapable of rehabilitation. Imagineering has a long and difficult history in the leadership suites, with only the brilliant and generous leadership of Marty Solar as the exception.

I have been working at Walt Disney Imagineering full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Creative environment is great; opportunities for personal and professional development; working with people who are among the best in their field.

    Cons

Promotions are rare in my division; slow career growth.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The Project Hire process is a bad idea. It gives valuable field experience to people who are laid off upon their return, while denying the professional growth to the core team members who could provide the most benefit to the Company.
