    Pros

The best safety program ever. From top management down to front lines. They are serious about safety. Money and benefits are good. Management setting up mines to be power house in market to come. Well run. Security in job.

    Cons

A lot of hours worked. Coal mines have a certain amount of danger.

    Advice to Management

    Negative Outlook

I worked at Walter Industries full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I loved my time at Walter Energy. I was employed there for 7 years as an underground electrician. Work was dirty, hot during the summer and cold during the winter. I made a lot of good friends, and learned more than I can even remember. If they ever get back on their feet. I would highly recommend them.

    Cons

Other than the fact that you are spending a good portion of your life underground, none really. The six days a week gets old, but the money makes up for it.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you are doing, good times come and they go. The ground level management at #7 west is outstanding.

    Pros

Freedom to appply many different creative solutions. The culture their is the type of atmosphere that is very helpful with my profession. I am also allowed to approach most projects with a level of say so.

    Cons

Lack of understanding from within about the different roles neccesary to accomplish certain task. Also having to act as an administrater 30 - 40 percent of the time slows my engagements down.

    Advice to Management

Implement a CIO who has somewhat been in the trenches. Allow the department too carefully choose employees with different specialized skills to create more effective teams. Seperate development and administration for the power users who are constantly engaged in projects and enforce end users who are primarily the customer of solutions, to become more involved in all stages of projects, and not just when something is working properly.

I have been working at Walter Industries (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The people at Walter Energy are amazing! They are hard working, trustworthy and dependable. The company as a whole was a good place to work before the bad business decisions.

    Cons

The company started going down fast when they bought the Canada Mines. The stock last time i checked was .42 cents and layoffs was happening all around the company.

    Advice to Management

Listen More to the boots on the ground. Their opinions matter as well.
