I met a lot of great people, the management is very competent, and they like to promote internally!

I worked at Washington Trust Bank as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

The benefits and holidays are great! They give annual raises, and really keep the employees first.

    Cons

It's not always the most exciting job, and if you don't make an effort to move ahead in the company you can end up stuck in the same position

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep promoting internally! It really helps the team atmosphere

Could be good, but like many banks out there, not many career paths

I have been working at Washington Trust Bank full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The bank provides the framework for employees to conduct business as one sees fit. Very few constraints as long as you're getting the job done. Very little pressure.

    Cons

Company does very little to show you a path to work towards. As a younger professional eager to progress, management hasn't done much to show me anything to work towards. They have said - during annual reviews - that I have the capabilities to reach higher and higher levels within the organization, but rarely provide any tangible goals to get to the next step. Ultimately, this has led to a 'going through the motion' type of environment for me and others around me.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize and reward younger talent. Make an effort to be somewhat progressive.

    Pros

It is a great company to work for with great people. They are very involved in supporting the local communities where their Bank resides. They provide materials and training for their employees to be successful and met sales goals. They also attract banking customers that are more about a relationship banking experience vs. 'hey let's just cash my check' type of customer. Washington Trust wants customers who also value a long term relationship and who are willing to pay maybe a little more to have a checking acct. relationship because that comes with years of great customer service.

    Cons

I found some of the challenges to be about pay increases. Due to the economy, at one point they had to put a 'pay freeze' on our salaries. While I struggled with that, since during that time I took a promotion with no additional pay, I understood that needed to be done in avoidance of lay-offs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep up the great work!

    Pros

Great benefits, positive working environment, outstanding culture, great reputation among the community

    Cons

None! The company is in great shape, and with the Sterling - Umpqua merger should be in great shape for the coming years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Took them a while to update their technology systems for employees and customers but now they are competitive and current. They need to stay current with that as much as possible.

    Pros

fun, challenging job. I really liked workin on the online banking team. The training was really good.

    Cons

It felt like a popularity contest. If you weren't one of the favorites, you would not grow within the call center. The upper management ruined my experince there.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take value in the people who have been there and know what they are doing.
