I worked at Waters full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Innovative on the chemistry side (extremely innovative), so if you are a chemist working on instruments, it's a very exciting place to work.

    Cons

There's a lot of internal hiring, and not so much workforce reduction. This can be good...or it can lead to a completely stagnant employee base.

There are no set career paths for lower level employees. You stay in the job you have until you quit/retire or you force a move.

All higher level management is on the verge of retirement without a clear succession plan.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Career paths, employee development, and a good work-life balance are not frivolous. These are ideas that have been cultivated for the past two decades. Please get HR to exit the '70s.

I worked at Waters full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Waters didn't have the downs of the 2009 economy.

    Cons

They had very low attrition, therefore did not have to give good raises to retain employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Dan Mc should appreciate non degree engineers as highly as BS/MS engineers and consider accomplishments equally.

    I worked at Waters full-time

    Pros

Abundance of engineering/mfg resources and toys. Dependable employment. Good people to be around. A lot of physically active people to socialize with.

    Cons

Too conservative/inflexible on compensation (promotions, raises, vacation days, work travel, etc). Located out in the boonies.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You're trying to adopt the culture of a high tech company but you started with increasing the pressure on people to produce more and have yet to adopt any flexibility on compensation and benefits to balance the increased pressure. Personally, I felt it didn't matter if I worked harder or better than the next person. Whatever I got was going to come 1 year after the person who started 1 year before me because that's just how things are done. It stifled my ambition. Don't be afraid to rock the boat a little. And beware external hires for middle management rather than internal. What kind of message does that send...?

Easy to get involved with hight level programs and projects

    Cons

I worked at Waters full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

relaxed schedule, no competition among group, very casual environment, upper level management very open and approachable

    Cons

"That's the way we've always done it" attitude is rampant, older demographic makes relating to coworkers difficult for younger employees,

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take care of your younger employees as they will be the lifeblood of Waters in 5-10 years. Start being more progressive thinkers.
