I worked at Wausau Paper full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good customers, quality of life balance

    Cons

Regional or Territory Managers are absentee landlords, little to no company direction, ever changing goals making bonus attainment nearly impossible

    Advice to Management

Leave and let new blood in

I have been working at Wausau Paper (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Some very bright people in manufacturing leadership roles.

    Cons

This company has no future in Wisconsin. Everything will be shifted to Kentucky in short order. In addition, its stock is in play by activist venture capital groups whose ultimate interest is in selling the company so they can realize the profit they forecasted when they bought the large blocks of stock they did. As soon as this company reaches financial success and gets the attention of their larger competitors, they'll be acquired and all non-production employees will probably lose their positions. Unless you're truly desperate and/or are willing to look for another job in 2 - 3 years, don't bother.

    Advice to Management

Stop giving management employees false hope of a future with Wausau Paper.

    Pros

Great people to work with, great benefits.

    Cons

Stingy with raises. Great incentive plan that is difficult to achieve.

    Advice to Management

Consider shift a bit more power down to the mid-level people. You are missing dollars because you fear spending a few dimes to build healthy relationships.

I worked at Wausau Paper full-time

    Pros

A business trying to improve its I.T. environment. Some management quite open to change and new ideas. Employees care about helping business customers. Benefits are generally better than one might expect.

    Cons

Core management concepts are staid and slow to adapt to the modern world. Compensation was reasonable but limited. As with similar businesses, the goal of management seems to be to maintain a status quo with other organizations (and the past) rather than innovate, adapt and think outside the box concerning employment attitudes.

I have been working at Wausau Paper full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

There are many people there who truly care and work very hard to do the right thing.

    Cons

Management does not listen to employees. Some hourly employees are not allowed to take lunch breaks. Management bases treatment of employees on whether they are liked personally or not.

    Advice to Management

Hopefully Starboard will do their job and replace the entire management group before they run this company completely in the ground.

    Pros

Wausau Paper can be a very productive place to work, allowing an individual to rise to their potential.

    Cons

Wausau Paper has a large turnover in upper management. When new management arrives they make changes without investigating the potential's of the current employee's

    Advice to Management

New upper management should review with known facts before making assumption's on their own. They should look out for the business at hand.

I have been working at Wausau Paper full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great people. Great benefits. Good wages for the area.

    Cons

Lousy employee review process - demeaning and lowers morale. This company needs a more objective review process and should definitely implement a 360 Review System. I believe it's difficult for some managers to be objective when they really don't have a clue what you do.

    Advice to Management

Be careful that you look at the whole person and don't pigeon-hole people based on only what you see they can do. Challenges and opportunities will allow some employees to shine and show you qualities and characteristics that you never knew they had.
