I have been working at WaveCreste full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

They are very positive. Time off policy is fairly flexible (PTO). The AT&T managers (external) were understanding and encouraging.

    Cons

Compensation is less than adequate. Office culture has gone down the tubes. Refusal of the company to pay PTO upon separation from the organization. Company has taken 8 and 1/2 months (and counting) to pay a promised end-of-year bonus (which was in lieu of a raise). There are virtually NO opportunities for advancement in this company!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please trumpet successes! You don't actually seem to be following through with any of your visionary and positive messages. Also, Why has it taken 8 and a half months to "think about" the annual bonus that was supposed to have been given at the end of last year?

    Pros

Good 'stepping stone' place to work, for those with tech skills, in an market lacking many (if any) jobs for this skill set. It is a great thing to have on your resume and many employees have gone on to better jobs through the contacts they have made here.

    Cons

Mismanaged - the company has both the drawbacks of being big and small. Big company in the way that employees are treated like a semi-disposable product and small in the way that gossip and immature behavior are rampant. There are literally ZERO chances for advancement, regardless what the company says. Most of the founding employees and management have left, taking their ideas with them, leaving the current set to go down with the ship.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You have a great concept (rural 'outsourcing') a concept that you pioneered, but now others have done it better. To say there was a lack of transparency would be an understatement. The company ACTIVELY keeps info from the employees, purposely so that cannot compare notes. The employees often hear of staff changes or company news from external clients, with whom the company shares this info.

    Pros

The people I worked with in my project were fantastic, and very eager to help someone out.

    Cons

The extended hours with no compensation. Being on call for deployments every weekend when originally was told that this would happen maybe once a month.

    Pros

Great people, competitive pay for the area, very focused on performing exceptionally for the clients they have. Employees are valued part of the company. Starting to become more diverse in their client pool.

    Cons

Advancement into any upper level takes considerable amount of time unless coming with lots of experience. On the job training, meaning you are not given any direction or training and expected to learn on the job as you are supporting a major client. Position can disappear suddenly. Experience in some positions doesn't transfer to any credible experience outside the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more upfront about advancement opportunities.

    Pros

Now that upper management has churned a bit, I can't think of any redeeming qualities other than it's a job.

    Cons

Mark Viertel is now 3 CEOs in the past. Glassdoor needs to update their data. Todd Richard is the person running the show now, as CEO of WaveCreste, which is the replacement company for Genesis Networks. Mark was a decent man. Very much so. He was out of his league in running an IT shop but the local investors liked him enough to hire him in. Subsequent CEOs have chipped away at the humanity of the company, which leaves a void in both pay and personal satisfaction.

Body shop. If you're salaried, 60+hour weeks w/low wage is the norm. No support from management, no additional help hired to cut your hours.

Middle management is pushed into rolls for which they have no experience. When a need arises, upper management just assigns a middle manager to the task. Mediocre results, if that good, are the norm. Projects lag or fail because of this, growth stalls, profits slim, raises to employees are tokens only.

Insurance is meh. If you have a heart attack, you're probably in a very good place for health care. For other health matters, youse pays yer money, youse takes yer chances.

If you're dumb enough to move to Abilene for these jobs, you'll find you've been suckered. If you're worth your salt, you can negotiate to work from home no matter where you are.

Also if you move there, you'll find they will pay some of your moving expenses to Abilene. When they drop you because your client's project is done, they won't pay to move you back and there are no decent IT jobs in Abilene. Plan on moving out of Abilene at your own expense once they come to your desk and tell you your services are no longer required and escort you out the door.

Locals believe their own lies about Abilene and will think they're telling you the truth about the cost of living being way lower. Yes, gas is cheaper and you'll drive fewer miles, but...

    * Food is enormously expensive.
    * Brick-for-brick and acre-for-acre, housing is no cheaper than DFW metroplex. The locals are talking about comparing an 1980 Abilene 1500sf wood frame house with 6 outside corners to a 2005 Fort Worth 2200sf brick house with 10 outside corners. Find a 1500sf wood frame house in Fort Worth on the same size lot and the house will cost the same as in Abilene. Assuming you can find that Fort Worth wood frame house with cracked windows, dead tree in the font yard, peeling paint, dirt for a lawn, etc.
    * Golf courses are crap, no matter what the locals tell you, unless you like weedy, brown greens and pocked tees.
*Entertainment venues are few and far between, plan on driving to Fort Worth or Austin and there goes your gasoline savings.

Overall it's just as expensive as living in DFW and you get paid 50% of your worth.

Abilene is a rusty, dusty, decaying town. Trashy place to live and work. Looks like one huge ghetto of a larger city. A common lament from newcomers is, "It looks like a nuclear bomb went off 50 miles miles away." Yes, there are a few pockets where people don't park on their lawns, they water enough to keep grass alive and don't let it grow into the streets, but these are the exceptions. Yet despite everyone having smart phones and tablets, ATVs and either a rifle or horse for every family member, they live in comparative squalor to larger cities. Money seems to be spent on playing and owning the latest gadgets but not taking care of lifestyle, houses, cars, appearance. Little interest in leaving something better behind when they check out of this world. Use it up, throw it away.

The local paper published an article in 2012 saying less than 1/3 of Abilene parents encourage their children to go to college and less than 10% actually save any money towards their children's education. Then again, the local paper isn't exactly known for accuracy or professional journalism.

Plus side: rush hour is 7 minutes long from 7:55 to 8:02 AM. But it is NOT true that any place in Abilene is only 10 minutes away. 20, maybe, but not 10.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Can't think of any. Following the Harvard Bean Counter philosophy of "People Are Disposable Assets" makes the company an anti-people company, regardless of a few plaques on the wall that make claims to the contrary.

    Pros

the only reason to work at GNS is for the opportunity for career advancement outside of the company

    Cons

blatent time theft, no compensation for overtime, no bonuses (terminated), taking vacation time is frowned upon, clients dictate work hours, frequent furloughs, layoffs, uncompetitive salaries, general mistreatment by management and clients, unfairness, culture of dishonesty and deception, enjoyment / happiness is frowned upon, no safety from layoffs- your day could be the next no matter what you've done or how well you've done it... you'll find that you can take the abuse or be fired. you'll actually be asked, "do you want to keep your job or not?"

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The business model by which you operate is systemically flawed. Your daily grind of abusing employees does not afford you the opportunity to get ahead- it only prolongs the inevitable collapse of your company. Operating to protect the bottom line results in sacrificing your people to keep the bottom line safe. If you'd take care of your people they would take care of the bottom line.

    Pros

Friendly people. Since a lot of people on the Oasis project are from out of town everyone is in the same boat so generally it is easy to make friends and do stuff out of work with co-workers.

    Cons

Uninvolved management. Long hours (depends on Amdocs manager). Some people work 50 - 60 hours a week or longer (one guy was averaging 70 hours a week).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Manage by walking around. Having a conference call for status once a week doesn't provide enough feedback and some people may not want to complain in an open forum. Spread the money around to retain people. Genesis receives money from the sales tax pool (DCOA) and need to up the salaries to retain people. Otherwise for the most part people will continue to search elsewhere and given the opportunity leave which is opposite of the DCOA's goal of creating jobs in Abilene.
