Pros
As a company we work hard and play hard. We have floor parties, department outings, and just generally have a good time with each other. This makes you want to do your very best work when it's crunch time - you feel like everyone, in every facet of the business, is working right alongside you.
Cons
Compared to some other companies, pay can start low for college-level positions - though benefits go a long way towards offsetting this.
Advice to Senior Management
They seem to be on top of this, but it 's worth mentioning nonetheless - Keeping the corporate culture that's been developed here intact while growing the company can be difficult, but is integral to what makes Wayfair such an amazing place to work - so far, they've done a great job!
Pros
Wayfair mostly hires employees straight out of school, which is great if you fall into this category. You'll be able to fit in easily and build relationships with your colleagues.
Cons
Wayfair definitely takes advantage of its young employees and pays them the bare minimum. Most of their employees haven't worked at any other companies so aren't sure exactly what to expect in terms of compensation. Comparable roles at other companies pay 20%-50% more. Because of this, the best talent usually leave after 1-2 years.
There is a glut of middle management. They are mostly people who have been with the company for a while. Most of these managers are mediocre and lack the experience and talent for their position. There are some exceptions to this but for the most part, you'll be frustrated working them. They won't be able to offer you any guidance or direction.
Advice to Senior Management
The equity plan was clearly meant for upper management. It is ineffective at retaining your middle and lower employees and most see it as a sham.
Pros
people that work there are very young and fun. THere is happy hour
Cons
Miserable people are the only people calling into the store for an issue
Advice to Senior Management
let people apply for other positions in the company
Pros
youthful atmosphere, innovative, given responsibility, possible fast career progression
Cons
LOW PAY. Aside from tech pay is low. Difficulty retaining talent. Entry level positions for non-tech range from 30k in category management to 45k for business analyst. Candidates waste their time travelling extensively interviewing for positions they would never have applied for had they known the salary. Bonuses are rare and also low. Extremely high turnover, work is not well structured, certain team members are completely incompetent due to lack of talent. Recruiting video shows almost all ivy league employees however upon starting work, it becomes obvious those are the only ive leaguers at the entire company.
Advice to Senior Management
quality or quantity
Pros
- Short individual and interesting projects gives responsibility to take the project from the beginning to the end.
- Very open environment where people are willing to share information and help out.
- A vast selection of problems one can deal with so you never get bored of the same work.
- Great pay and benefits. (Free snacks, matching 401K, 3 weeks of unpaid vacation + 3 or more paid)
- Naturally competitive environment where one strives to perform better because his peers do and not because you compete against others.
Cons
- Little feedback from the management although they have plans to improve that.
- No sick days. (They are included in the paid vacation)
Advice to Senior Management
Great job!
Pros
Wayfair has grown exponentially since I started, and being able to be a part of such a dynamic company is a lot of the reason why I've stuck around. It's definitely not a place you go to work if you want a standard 9-5. It's a vibrant office environment, the people are fantastic (you'll meet friends that you'll want to hang out with outside of work), and opportunities are definitely there for the ambitious. They are constantly implementing employee engagement tools, they care about investing in the employees as much as they want employees to invest themselves in the company. A great initiative over the last year has been Wayfair U, which is a great benefit for entry level to mid-level managers. It provides the tools and support to help younger-in-career employees grow professionally and personally.
Cons
Comp for entry to mid-level management is definitely on the low end, if at all on par with the market. They are still under the impression that opportunity and responsibility are more valuable to younger professionals than comp, which is true for the most part, but along the same vein it can only last for so long without a significant raise. They’ve done a good job over the past ~1.5 years in recruiting outside senior management which has helped bring in better management/leadership, but there are still a few groups that still have very green managers which can cause some pain. As big as Wayfair is, they still try to operate at an entrepreneurial level. Decisions, changes, and actions can be made with little to no input from all concerned parties. This causes a lot of unneeded angst when planning reactionary measures.
Advice to Senior Management
Take time when making large decisions. Think about what the change is going to impact and take proactive steps in addressing issues/concerns before large scale changes are rolled out.
Pros
Wayfair gives you the opportunity to challenge yourself and work toward your professional goals. Performance is what drives your career.
Cons
We are still a young company and the industry we are involved in is constantly changing. This means priorities and other company initiatives can constanlty be changing.
Pros
Wayfair is a fun place to work with a young staff and a very strong ability to innovate and grow. It is a terrific place to work.
Cons
The pay is low. It is right in boston, so you are paying to commute or live in the city. The pay should be higher to reflect this, but it is something that they are working on.
Advice to Senior Management
Continue everything you are doing, however do not post internal positions unless they are determined to be necessary, as it can be a let down to all who apply if the position is rescinded.
Pros
good benefits and employees treated well
Cons
partime hours are ridiculous, pay is not worth the mental beating
Advice to Senior Management
better training
Pros
Great coworkers- young community. The company tries to provide group building activities by giving cash ever month to go out with your group. Generally a good attitude around the office, except it is a tolling position when you're getting yelled at so there is definite negativity as well.
Cons
Low starting salary. The company was constantly changing which was a good and bad thing. It was bad because no one ever knew if they were going to be steadily doing the tasks at hand, or if they would be moving to a different group/area.
