Just plain terrible!

Assistant Professor (Current Employee)
Detroit, MI

I have been working at Wayne State full-time

ProsCompetitive salary and benefit.
SOME collegial colleagues.
SOME qualified faculty.
Will get the chance to work alone; nobody will bother you because nobody comes to school

ConsNo sense of direction at the department level and at the school level.
Bad quality of education
Poor quality of students
Complacent attitude by tenured faculty - half of them only show up to teach their evening class (Partly perhaps because the main campus is located in Detroit, and faculty generally live as far away from Detroit as possible)

Advice to Senior ManagementThere is no point giving advice. Nobody's listening. The university is a lost cause.

Great place if you don't stay too long.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Wayne State full-time for more than 10 years

ProsBenefits are excellent. Life, Health, Vision, Dental. Paid Vacations, sick time and any purpose days. Tuition Assistance. Employee Assistance. The University also has a Fitness Center and encourages healthy lifestyle with their workers. Work/life balance is excellent. They do offer training modules online and in seminars to develop employees. Of course this only is beneficial if a person is given an opportunity to utilize what they've learn and not let it go to waste. Which leads me to the Cons:

ConsBecause of the economy, clerical positions are often the victim of budget cuts. If you're management you'll be fine. Salaries among clerical do not keep up with the rate of inflation and depending on the department you work in, opportunities for advancement are nil unless you know someone in management that can "pad" position questionnaires and create a position for you. Office politics are high in some departments. Some departments do not promote from within. Before they will give opportunities to current staff they will create positions, give them a fancy title (when the job is really clerical) and hire someone from the outside or in the department that is a friend or relative. Not all departments do this, but there are a few that do.

Nepotism and cronyism often takes place in some departments You get ahead by being close friends with colleagues, and superiors. People's relatives or friends are frequently hired after "mandatory" interview process (but only the relative or friend was going to actually be hired).

Advice to Senior ManagementManagement needs to scrutinize departments that have a high turnover rate with staff and faculty and departments who over the years have practically eliminated needed positions only to turn around and "create" new higher paid positions under a different name so their family or and friend could get the job.

Was satisfied working there and had excellent job reviews until I became a "financial liability"

Research Assistant (Former Employee)

I worked at Wayne State full-time for more than 10 years

ProsGreat benefit package for salaried employees

ConsIf you work hard there for too many years and earn your well-deserved annual raises, they terminate you due to "budget cuts". This happened to me after 15 years and I was the top wage earner there. They've already replaced me with a newbie making starting salary.

Advice to Senior ManagementThere are a lot of dead weight workers doing the bare minimum who get to keep their jobs because you're afraid they'll scream [insert appropriate word here] racism, sexism, ageism, homophobia even though you KNOW they're incompetant and insubordinate.
