I have been working at Wayne State as a contractor (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Midtown are is improving with fewer shootings and robberies occurring. Medical and university serve an urban mission in the city of Detroit.

    Cons

This is a very tense environment. Medical school was informed last month it's accreditation is being put on probation. Announcements were made to the university community about reductions in departments and extensive reorganization in response. University leadership is problematic. Google "Wayne State University" & "lawsuits" to get an idea of the types of things going on there. If you have other employment options, recommend that you take them. Bond ratings on this university were lowered last December. Enrollments are dropping.

    Advice to Management

Reduce Administrative bloat at upper levels in order to improve budget.

I have been working at Wayne State (More than 3 years)

    Pros

With hard work, you can earn a degree at Wayne State. If staying within the metro detroit area it is one the accredited university you can attend.

    Cons

Wayne State Associate Dean of Graduate Programs recently announced higher stipend support for School of Medicine graduate students. However, support is not increasing because the overall length of stipend is decreasing. It is a financial maneuver meant to convey increased support. If going into the sciences/research it is better to choose another regional university over Wayne State.

I have been working at Wayne State (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Access to good mentors if motivated.

    Cons

Poor stipend support for Ph.D. students. 20K is among lowest (bottom quartile) in nation for science. Comparable schools provide thousands more. Department (in school of medicine) has too many tenured professors with no funding and poor publishing records. Little career support for non academic research paths. Faculty is stuck in a 60-70's era mentality. 1 in 5 will actually work in academia. Department leadership is lacking and typically the graduate officer is appointed to a non-productive professor. The current graduate officer only has 3 publications within the past 5 years. Overall, while the department holds itself in high esteem it requires massive improvements. I recommend prospective graduate students seek other institutions for graduate training.

I worked at Wayne State part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Accessibility of fitness equipment and showers. Lots of activities & information is available at the front desk, leading you to be more in-the-loop with campus events.

    Cons

Leadership does not invest much time/effort into employee satisfaction and seems to have very little tolerance/respect for student employees. Time off is tough to come by unless you set your availability before you start working there You can bet on not making a penny over minimum wage here.

    Advice to Management

Host employee appreciation events/parties. Spend some time getting to know employees personally, since they are the key to your success. Consider alternate methods for addressing concerns with employees. Get more sleep.

I have been working at Wayne State full-time

    Pros

Competitive salary and benefit. SOME collegial colleagues. SOME qualified faculty. Will get the chance to work alone; nobody will bother you because nobody comes to school

    Cons

No sense of direction at the department level and at the school level. Bad quality of education Poor quality of students Complacent attitude by tenured faculty - half of them only show up to teach their evening class (Partly perhaps because the main campus is located in Detroit, and faculty generally live as far away from Detroit as possible)

    Advice to Management

There is no point giving advice. Nobody's listening. The university is a lost cause.

    Pros

The benefits package is very good. The wellness warrior program is excellent.

    Cons

The practice of hiring and promoting friends and family before others is widespread. If you are not related to a senior staff member or if you are not their good buddy, you have very little chance of getting a good position. And if by chance you do get hired, you can forget promotions unless you join the the right "click" at Wayne. Because of the power of the clicks and and the lack of action by the executive administration to stop these practices, It is a very difficult work environment if you are not in a click. There is a lot of exclusion and information is hoarded within the click and groups. Stressful work environment.

    Advice to Management

There should be rules that if you are related to other members of a division, you cannot be hired by that division. I see other companies doing this, why can't Wayne?

    Pros

Excellent Benefits package. If you have a relative or family member who works there, you get promoted easily (you also get your job this way).

    Cons

Nepotism and cronyism are king at Wayne State. You get ahead by being close, CLOSE friends with colleages, and superiors. People's relatives are frequently hired after "mandatory" interview process (but only the relative was going to actually be hired). Poor, Poor management of people. Most managers have NO management training. Most managers have never worked outside of the University. Most don't have a clue how to treat people. Tenured managers are even more difficult because they can openly abuse staff and their academic superiors can't and won't do anything about it.

    Advice to Management

Take some managing courses. Get rid of Tenure.
