    Pros

I had an excellent team at Weber State. I worked there for four years and had plenty of time to get my work done and do some homework as well.

    Cons

Being a student worker, you do not get any health benefits and they are very restrictive on how many hours a week you can work, which is hard.

    Advice to Management

Provide opportunities for students to grow to full time position, if warranted. Also, be flexible with hours and availability.

    Pros

Wonderful people to work for and with. Fantastic campus

    Cons

    Only typical university funding issues.

    Advice to Management

    Keep open minded.

  3. Practical experience in an administrative setting; work-study is a great experience!

    Pros

Working in the Student Services building was far more engaging that if I had remained an 'average' student who simply comes to class. You get to know people in different offices and learn the layout of the land. For those seeking additional experience (or their first job to put on a resume), work-study in ANY Student Services office is a great way to go.

    Cons

It can be difficult learning to balance course work with work work, even though it's part-time. The issue is that there's so many other work-study employees trying to keep an office operational that things get bogged down, shifts sometimes go uncovered because they're swapped one too many times.

    Advice to Management

There seems to be a bit too much gossip amongst hired staff members, many of whom should be far more professional after years of working there. It's demoralizing and outright disrespectful when any full-time staff member (with serious credentials) passes judgment on any work-study employee/student. I would advise that, when warranted, a supervisor should handle things professionally and behind closed doors, not speak about that person to other staff members with the door wide open.

  5. Shepherd Union Building Manager, supervised building after hours 4-12 am. Helped custodial crews when not busy

    Pros

Lots of down time to study
Great boss that listens to problems
    Great coworkers
Fairly flexible schedule, work was tailored around school schedule

    Cons

Pretty inefficient use of time and resources
People you serve can be annoying and difficult
Sometimes patron expectations were unrealistic- scheduling would tell them something completely contrary to what could be done. Put us in a position where we had to enforce rules that were common sense.

    Advice to Management

Lack of micromanagement of this position was a blessing and curse. The way things were done was often incredibly inefficient and wasteful. There really isn't any reason a custodian can't do the job of the Building Managers. In my opinion we make more than the position deserves

    Pros

Only a 20 hour/ per week job, 4 hours a day-5 days a week. I had a 5-9 shift so I was done with work before my morning began.

    Cons

low pay, high stress, high demand, no appreciation, bad supervisors. With the supervisor I had, if you didn't want to be a part of the "religious clique" then you weren't welcomed, and sometimes belittled.

    Advice to Management

Don't let religion be in a workplace setting. A person can be a good employee based off their work ethics, not their religion!

Flexibility and discretionary use of time outside of the classroom.

    Cons

Dismal pay. Better than most other colleges in the state but still dismal for the amount of energy and effort required to do the job well.

    Advice to Management

    Increase pay.
