Grateful for a place that gave me a chance

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsThey have good starting pay and benefits.

ConsThere can be a lot of red tape and bureaucracy. A lot of the work is thankless and you work with many departments and Principal Investigators that are rude.

    Struggling in today's funding climate

    Postdoctoral Fellow (Former Employee)
    New York, NY

ProsBasic research gets a lot of direction from the clinical side of the college.
New York City has a lot of scientists to collaborate with.
    Facilities are updated.
Lots of opportunities for networking, seminars, career advice.

ConsWorst IT department I've ever come across in a university setting
Red tape covers everything. Getting reimbursed for a conference is a Herculean task.
Basic science is not as respected as translational/clinical, so basic scientists can expect to be shoved down the priority ladder for a lot of things.
Lately, a lot of funding has left the university, making for tense times.
There's a lot of dead weight in the administrative chain. Though there are very helpful shining stars that I've encountered, a good amount of admin staff are just incompetent and awful.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop. Just stop. The red tape is awful. Hire competent people that can make decisions so that policies are flexible. Having 'zero tolerance' makes working at Weill difficult.

    A great institution with a well-respected name.

    Research Technician (Current Employee)

Pros- lots of publications come out of cornell
    - NYC
    - nice new facilities
    - tons of funding

Cons- low pay, for NYC this is hard to manage well
    - 35 hour work weeks which means if you're being paid hourly you get less $$
    - most labs will expect you to work over 35 hours a week with no pay.

Advice to Senior Management- labs need to be watched to make sure they aren't taking advantage of their researchers.
