I worked at Weis Markets part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Weis markets has very good training programs set in place, and they seem to try and stay up to date on all their training, in addition by making it mandatory that everyone participate. They work with everyone's busy life schedules usually with no issues. As far as personnel growth goes the opportunity is there if some one wants to take advantage of it.

    Cons

As far as this section is concerned, I believe the only thing Weis markets really needs to consider working on is their pay scale, when someone is willing to work there and by giving their 100%, you then have a valuable asset, and by not taking advantage of that asset and doing what it takes to keep them there is a huge mistake on the employer, especially if that employee is a family man trying to support his family, and being supportive of family values, as well as the companies values. Furthermore I think that settling for second rate employees because that is the best they can do, but letting the best slip away, well that is just a poor excuse.

    Advice to Management

    From above.

    Pros

I worked with a great group, which made every day worthwhile. My managers were very flexible with my schedule, which was terrific since I was balancing a full-time class schedule as a student, and when I was searching for another job after I graduated.

    Cons

Very low salary, with a grand total of one 15 cent raise during my two years, even as my responsibilities increased from gas attendant to cashier to front end monitor. Lots of corporate policies that are well-meaning, but tend to over-complicate things in practice. My store managers were mostly terrific, however corporate management had a culture of fear which trickled down to all of us. VERY high turnover rate.

    Advice to Management

Treat employees better and provide them with a livable wage, they are the ones who represent your company. A happy employee means happier customers.

    Pros

    -- Flexible working environment
    -- Fast paced work
-- Ability to think critically about the business and impact change
-- Microcosm of the business. Corporate does not interfere with day to day operations and you must rely on your own business acumen to make decisions that impact results

    Cons

-- Long working hours with little or no support from corporate
-- Company lacks the know-how to stay competitive in the modern grocery business, store fronts are painfully out of date, technology infrastructure is lightyears behind competition and improvements are made slowly.
-- Company lacks strong direction, and commitment to being a modern grocery store chain
-- Labor management practices are not designed to support the current infrastructure of the stores. Do not have enough labor hours to maintain best practices that the company has set in place.
-- Training is antiquated and insufferable. Does not achieve desired result. Department managers that I have been around are not competent and lack the talent and drive to succeed.
-- Pay for hourly associates is low including those in department manager positions, lending itself to inferior talent

    Advice to Management

-- Invest heavily in advertising, technology, and store fronts.

    Pros

Very friendly co workers, excellent flexibility with my schedule, and feeling of being part of an awesome team

    Cons

Upper management was disconnected with what really happens on the store level. They would implement policies that would be harmful to business that everyone in the tactical position knew.

    Advice to Management

Connect more with the store employees because they handle your customers everyday and know what they want and are looking for in a grocery store.

    Disapproves of CEO

    Pros

    - It is relatively easy to get hired regardless of job experience so it makes for a good first job.
    - Lots of hours

    Cons

    - Don't accept a "promotion" without getting something in writing.
    - Mostly high school kids who are unreliable to show up
    - Very low pay
    - "Part-time"(less pay, no benefits) with Full-time hours

    Advice to Management

The reason you're losing customers is because you don't prioritize your budgets. We constantly had customers walking out leaving carts full of groceries because there weren't enough cashiers. The front end was always where hours were cut which is the face of your store. You don't need 3-4 managers per store. That money could be reallocated to the departments.

    Pros

Good job security, friendly coworkers, great first job, work/life balance good

    Cons

Management needs to treat lower employees with more respect, pay usually starts at minimum wage, open holidays therefore you may need to work, customers are less than intelligent and tend to belittle you

    Advice to Management

Be more courteous to your employees
