    Pros

The hours were always flexible, unless it was a holiday.

    Cons

Once you take on this job you're signing your soul away. For 6 and a half years I was promised manager positions only to be told over and over again that I'm too nice, but I must train the people to take the Customer Service Manager position. Constantly do the manager's work and get no recognition until they need to throw you under the bus.

    Advice to Management

get your crap together, and stop playing favorites

    Pros

Customers were enjoyable and a lot of coworkers were good to be around. Room for advancement if you had the right last name.

    Cons

Upper management promotes friends and family. Work every weekend and holiday no matter what. Payscale is horribly low. Too many chiefs and not enough Indians

    Advice to Management

    Stop micromanagement

    Pros

Good pay and benefits overall decent people to work with

    Cons

Management does not take care of issues, it's a joke to try to get them to listen

    Advice to Management

Listen to employees and enforce rules.

    Pros

The scheduling was always pretty flexible. I worked here during high school and college for the extra money and, they were always very understanding of the demands of my education. The employees were also mostly nice and friendly, and I looked forward to working with many of them.

    Cons

There was never a consistent amount of hours to be given. One week I would have 4 hours and the next week, I would have 40 hours. Full-time employees were very scarce and, in the four years I worked there - I never saw one person upgraded to full-time hours/benefits.

Also, there was never any discipline of bad employees. Employees would show up three/four hours late for their shift with no reprimand. The only reason anyone ever got fired was for stealing. The turn-over rate was very high.

    Advice to Management

Be nicer to your full-time staff! They are the only reason that some regular customers keep coming back.

    Pros

Not a very hard job. Mostly common sense needed.

    Cons

Labor is stretched too thin, pay is not competitive, and buildings are too old and run down.

    Advice to Management

They need to realize they want $14/hr work out of $7/hr associates, part timers are paid minimum wage and the expectations of them are too high. You get what you pay for.

    Pros

The atmosphere is excellent. The store managers are open to suggestions. The training of employees has merit. The company is family friendly and oriented.

    Cons

The training process of new employees needs to be reviewed for both the lenghth of time and the indiviuals who do the training. Training should be done by managers or manager assistants.

    Advice to Management

Upper management should be more open to suggestions from the rank and file rather than from only the regional managers or higher levels. Input from the employee who is actually doing the work should have more value.

  9. Unfair expectations of employees, bad management

    Pros

Clean store, nice customers, ten percent employee discount on Weis brand items

    Cons

Extremely low pay ($8.25 per hour in Produce department) [I was earning $8.90 per hour in retail (Sam's Club cashier associate) in 2004!!!], very limited hours for part time (<23 hours per week), managers complain about the most minute errors or don't even tell you what you are doing wrong.

    Advice to Management

Pay a fair wage for your hourly workers! Train your managers to assist new employees and give proper training so that new employees stay around for more than two weeks! Also offer the ten percent employee discount for all items inside the store, not just Weis brand products as A&P does.
