Great cause but very poor management

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
London, England (UK)

I worked at Wellcome Trust full-time

ProsGreat charitable cause
Good work/life balance
Great offices

ConsExtremely poor management (ppl who have held the same job all their lives and have no experience of managing others)
No career development opportunities
Suprisingly resistant to change and fresh thinking for an organisation that backs innovation in science

Advice to Senior ManagementTry and work for another company and get some management experience

Poor manager but a great organisation

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
London, England (UK)

I have been working at Wellcome Trust

ProsA very driven organisation. A huge variety of roles and positions throughout the organisation, with highly talented and very intelligent workforce.

Final salary scheme pension, and very good facilities.

ConsConflicting directions of various departments and internal politics lead to contradictory messages internally. The organisation as a whole appears unfocussed and lacking in a clear, uniform direction (though this could also be a benefit as well!).

No ability for employees to provide formal (or anonymous) feedback on their managers during personal development sessions.

Advice to Senior ManagementProvide better mechanisms for your employees to provide feedback on their managers. The current system doesn't work! Better communication between departments is vital.

Could have been great

Statistical Genetics Researcher (Former Employee)

I worked at Wellcome Trust

Pros- Interesting work
- Flexible working
- Mixed groups
- Nice location
- Good reputation and good for CV
- Struggling for much more!

Cons- Some low quality people hiding for a log time there
- Sucking up to senior managers by some people who need career advancement
- Poor technology
- Political colleagues - the most political group of people I've worked with
- Cliquey

Advice to Senior ManagementHave a look at what's going on!

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend
