    Pros

Great benefits. Engaged work environment. Really feels like you are working with some of the smartest people in the investment world.

    Cons

Extremely difficult hours. Pay is under the current market average. Not a lot of amenities around the office.

    Advice to Management

Give the younger/juniors more responsibility and leeway to pursue their own interests/goals in the financial world.

  2. Asset Mgt side of Wells Capital: Comfortable working environment not real exciting but not boring. Avg investment teams.

    Pros

Big company with many resources to help with your job. Medium-paced, quiet offices. Good credit training program.

    Cons

Bank resources are underutilized. I found little collaboration between departments even though their work is intertwined e.g. an oil analyst won't talk with the commodities trading group; equity analysts and fixed income groups keep to themselves.

Portfolio managers are happy with status quo, holding onto their position and skating. They have the "I don't care, it's not my $ attitude, when performance suffers", especially the institutional investment teams. They are lazy in a lot of cases and uninspiring. Not the type to flourish at other buy-side shops. Dead weight.. but why not? It's a cush job where the $ is ok.

Wells Capital is not a name brand and without much credibility in the institutional/buy-side world.
They don't take the time to further develop employees outside the credit training program. They wouldn't notice if you came in two hours late and left one hour early during the week days.

Senior management doesn't exist. They don't show face around the organization. You only learn about them if you read a power point presentation (the org chart page).. that's assuming if PM's let you look at the presentation.

    Advice to Management

Take some time to develop employees further. It doesn't take that much.

    Pros

Direct managers are supportive and flexible. We do get a lot accomplished, but there are a lot of hoops to jump and cost discussions.

    Cons

Compensation is lower than other investment managers and benefits are not competitive since the company is under the Wells Fargo structure .
Compensation is rarely near the mid point range.

    Advice to Management

Needs to put more focus on developing the strong employees they currently have and reward them.

    Pros

Autonous environment for investment teams. Smart people with high integrity. Wells Fargo brand is strong in some markets. Work life balance is very good and good benefits.

    Cons

At the core, it is an investment management firm within a bank. Costs are key. Salary is ok, get paid on asset growth which need to align well with salesforce/distribution.

    Advice to Management

More discussion on career opportunities in investment teams. Product growth options for existing teams.

    Pros

Work life balance is great. Generally low pressure environment. Stability of parent company.

    Cons

Tactical thinking. Narrow vision. Manual processes. Very risk averse. Many managers micromanage their team members. Overhead imposed by Wells Fargo parent company. Bonus structure limits reward for going above and beyond.

    Advice to Management

The message to be innovative and take risks followed by "if you run the ship aground your done", promotes micromanagement, minimizes scope, lengthens projects, and incents everyone to keep things the way they've always been done.
