I have been working at Wenner Media full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Fun subject matter. Great offices. For the most part, really nice, talented co-workers.

    Cons

Depends on which magagzine you work for: If it's Rolling Stone, great prestige and respect from the industry, writers, colleagues, etc. Us? Not so much...Ultimately, Wenner is a family store and Jann is the owner. He says "Jump!" You are advised to inquire "How high?" and proceed to jump. You are employed at his pleasure and should he take a disliking to you, you will be gone. It is what is, but it can be a lot of fun as long as you understand what you are getting into.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It is what it is: a family business. It's not going to change.

Good money till you max out your hours.

    I worked at Wenner Media

    Pros

Good people. Full-timers get promoted pretty often, but as a result are locked in there for life so it's nice if you're a full-timer and just want to "coast". They pay top dollar for talent.

    Cons

Completely inefficient. 2-3 times as many people as other comparable places. Part-time staff are treated well and go home on time, full-time staff stay there sometimes past midnight. 1000 hr cap per year that you can work there so prepare ahead and field other clients. Full-time staff morale is low. No new innovation due to "lifers". Many there 10+ years.

I have been working at Wenner Media full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

It is a relaxed environment unlike bigger names in the industry. Because it is privately owned there isn't that cold corporate feel.

    Cons

Salary is minimum and they are consistently hiring/firing people and re-distributing responsibilities. It comes off as unorganized and haphazard. There is strong nepotism amongst the higher-ups which is discouraging for those who want to try to make these magazines current and relevant - no outside advice is taken into consideration.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire a consulting company to help awaken the antiquated print media business model you have. Throw it out and start new instead of trying to shave off employees while readership steadily declines.

    Pros

Loved all the people I worked with directly. The magazine titles are great and can open a lot of doors. I learned a lot about publishing here.

    Cons

not many perks, lots of micromanaging from upper management, can become very stressful and deadline oriented, very little loyalty towards freelancers and contributors. Lots of hard working people get laid off or forced out.

    Pros

celebrities are always a fixture in the office and there are very cool people you work with. Working for the brands alone are something you can be proud of to have on your resume.

    Cons

Management is all over the place with no clear direction - goals change like the wind. There is a bully tactic on employee management. Very little growth from within

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Set a goal and commit to it.

I worked at Wenner Media as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Lots of learning opportunities. Had luncheons where we could meet and hear from the higher ups. The company is relatively small so you get to work with people you might not get to at a larger company. Very accommodating to my school schedule.

    Cons

    The office was very cold.

Great supportive Los Angeles team. Amazing/fun work environment and good work/life balance.

    Cons

During my time there was a lot of turn over in management. Some instability but everyone worked together and took care of what needed to get done.
