    Pros

Very wonderful staff who help you along every step of the way.

    Cons

The time card system is a work in progress.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I think offering promotions and job opportunities to the public and from within (especially transfer promotions would be fantastic). Also, if they had a volunteer and training regiment to bring talented workers in would be fantastic.

I have been working at West Contra Costa USD - Richmond full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

There are some administrators and fellow educators with their hearts in the right place. The administrators at the school are generally supportive of the teachers. When a student is causing unreasonable amounts of trouble for you, the administrators and guidance counselors are on your side first. Good effort is put into the athletic programs, and the administrators aim to make the workplace welcoming for all teachers.

    Cons

There are many terrible teachers here. The expectations are difficult to maintain and there is not much unity among the teaching staff. Terrible pay scale and advancement. High turnover rate for all staff. There is little oversight and accountability - when accountability is implemented, it is ineffective. There is a high rate of drug and alcohol abuse by the students (as expected in a high poverty school). Also, even though effort is put into the athletic programs, it seems that athletics sometimes ends up taking precedence over academics.

There are some people who really have a positive outlook and are doing their best to support the community's children.

    Cons

The pay scale increments quite slowly and remains low.
Being a part of the union puts teachers in a bucket with the glimmer of hope and all the bad and the ugly.

I worked at West Contra Costa USD - Richmond

    Pros

There was a great sense of community and staff worked well together.
There were numerous opportunities to help others.
There was an opportunity to be creative and connect with others.

    Cons

The work environment was inconsistent, with competing priorities from many different factions.
It was challenging to keep students motivated in the face of so many hardships and tragedies.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communication could be improved on many levels, so that newer employees have a better understanding of how to solve problems within the system. An organizational chart distributed during orientation would go a long way toward this.
