Pros
Great people to work with and morale is good.
Compensation is fair.
Hours are flexible.
Benefits are on par with other health care systems.
Much improvement since Highmark's potential buyout.
Cons
Fee to park, but it's the same as other hospitals
Company does not currently match retirement contributions
More communication from upper management would help.
Advice to Senior Management
I've worked at both UPMC and WPAHS...the morale is horrible at UPMC and I was made to feel expendable if their quota was not reached. Keep expanding and acquiring new doctors and hopefully the people of Allegheny County will finally realize which health system is better and more economical.
Pros
Colleagues are nice and hard working
Cons
Management is short sighted and protective of their own turf and behind.
Advice to Senior Management
Fortunately, Highmark will bring you into this century.
Pros
Good people to work wiht
Cons
System management needs solutions for UPMC system
Advice to Senior Management
Work with employers, Blue Cross
Pros
-Encouraged use of cutting edge technology, where applicable
-Flexible to hours worked by employees... as long as 40 hours were put in, didn't really matter when
-Friendly, comfortable environment, full of fun personalities
-Feel more professional than most IT departments... shirt & tie everyday
Cons
-Management is very disorganized
-One department is not aware of what another department is doing
-Nepotism exists from the C-level down to junior employees, paving the way for inappropriate promotions/demotions
-Little view of 'big picture' on the part of management
Advice to Senior Management
Choosing managers/lead developers based on merit and not personal relationship and history might help the company run more efficiently, and improving communication would help a project get out the door.
Pros
A place to work and learn, with great people
Cons
Media attention causes doubt as it relates to the future
Advice to Senior Management
Create more integration amongst departments and facilities
Pros
The health system is on the rise. If you have skills in clinical areas, the sky is the limit. It's a place to proud to work because of the people there. The regular employees are great.
Cons
Minorities have zero chance to move into management in any non clinical area. Even with better backgrounds and more knowledge, the non minority is always moved up. Looking at a management meeting for the largest hospital, will only find a handful of non white faces in the crowd.
Advice to Senior Management
Listen to the regular people who work there, they know the skeletons, and the wrongs going on. Consultants only have ideas that worked somewhere else. If the regular people who've been there for any length of time were given a voice without fear of retaliation, you'd find out things that a consultant never would, for a far cheaper price.
