Extreme distrust of Director level and higher

Project Manager (Current Employee) Topeka, KS

ProsFamily values are important to many.
Good benefits however HR is eroding these too.

ConsThere is an extreme distrust of leadership, specifically HR leadership. HR leadership has too much decision making authority and influence. It's toxic and comical. The annual "survey" does not reflect actual workplace sentiment.

The back-stabbing that occurs at the director and higher level will work in the short term for the selfish that are really good at it. As this behavior occurs, it ruins the workplace. It takes time to understand this behavior if you don't experience it regularly and it's costly to fix once the folks that truly care decide to fix it.

    HQ is in Topeka.

Advice to Senior ManagementTreat people with respect. Value the intellect within the company. There is this idea Westar people are stupid and only contractors or people outside of Topeka have brains. Fix this before the best leave the company which is beginning to happen.

Westar-the company that contracts out the real work and promotes laziness from within!

Good people but not very strategically minded

    Director (Former Employee) Topeka, KS

ProsI really enjoyed everyone I worked with. They were easy to get to know and very supportive. Mark Ruelle, CEO is a very smart man and very involved in the business. He makes a point of getting to know all employees and is very approachable. Things break down with his direct reports.

ConsVery traditional views with no long term strategic plan so their business continues to decline. It is also a good old boys workplace - no room for women or up and comers unless you have been one of the boys for a long time.

Great company to work for, but steer clear of Generation and Marketing

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Topeka, KS

    Pros- great pay and benefits
    - hours
    - smaller company

    Cons-horrible training
-co-workers acted like they were in high school
-if you want promoted, hang out with you boss

Advice to Senior Managementpromote based on skill, not on who I do not hang out with. Also, training new hires could be improved. The managers need to listen to employees goals so they can better manager them.

Very progressive for a utility. Well managed at the plant level.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsExcellent pay, benefits and security. Good leaders are present at all levels. Strong work culture and a high level of devotion to the company.

ConsPlant employees (salaried and hourly) work lots of hours. Not always a good work / life balance. Corporate and plant objectives are seldom aligned. Although there are some great management people, there is an unwillingness to address managers / directors that are substandard and it really weakens the overall strategy.

Advice to Senior ManagementCorporate needs to support the plants instead of micromanaging

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend
