I worked at Western Psychological Services

    Pros

If you want to get into grad school, a good place to start. You have direct access to very accomplished people in the field of psychology.

    Cons

Did not pay very well. Very independent work. Not good for someone that likes a lot of in person contact.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

They need to engage workers more. When people work independently doing research it can be lonely and this should be recognized by the company.

I worked at Western Psychological Services full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The people at WPS are amazing. You can make lots of friends and for the most part you will like the people you work with.

    Cons

Turnover is incredibly high in the last three years. They are slow to hire and quick to fire. The company lacks some serious direction and unless you're looking to work as a PD, there is very little room for growth. It has changed in the last five years from a company that had not fired anyone to a company that shows little compassion for its dedicated workers. It was once deemed a friendly family owned business and has become a completely numbers driven business, with no real vision and very little positive outlook.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give people room to grow. Promote those that deserve it and be more open. Stop trying to force culture down peoples throat and just let it happen naturally. Everybody is on watch because so many people get fired week in and week out. There is very little trust towards leadership because they rarely ever take time to listen to what employees really want. Tell the CEO to really listen and be more in touch with his workers.

I worked at Western Psychological Services full-time for more than a year

    Pros

WPS has a great core group of faithful employees who believe in their mission and who are dedicated to the betterment of the science.

    Cons

The companies so-called "core values" are a shell that add gloss to a shaky "leadership-team" led by a young, confident owner who more often than not demonstrated the inability to make sound internal business decisions which led to clashing and overall lack of true leadership.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If your career goal is to work where you are judged by ability, dedication and comittment to your work and company, then start looking...

I worked at Western Psychological Services

    Pros

great place to learn more about psychology research. Access to project directors that hold phD's in psychology who are more than happy to give advice about graduate school or the psychology field in general. Stable job, fairly flexible. No overtime, low stress, and layoffs are unheard of. (Although the firing rate at this company is fairy high and they definitely don't hesitate to give people the axe.)

    Cons

pay is low, no room for advancement. tasks given to research assistants are boring, tedious, and generally not very challenging. company makes good profit, but is stingy when it comes to facilities and employees. Computers are outdated, chairs old and flimsy, break room looks like a jail cell, and bathrooms are disgusting. Aside from the pension, benefits package does not even compare to the majority of companies out there. No sick days, no perks, 3 month probation period before you even begin accruing vacation days, and before healthcare coverage kicks in. No fancy company holiday dinners or any company events/activities for that matter. Environment is mundane, and does not encourage socializing. Do not apply for a job here if you are a social person! All furniture is arranged so that employees are facing a wall with their backs to the entrance. Gives a feel that you are being watched by everyone walking pass your office or cubicle.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Inorder to motivate employees to be more innovative, productive, and offer more to the company, management has to be willing to offer more to its employees. This may be a more generous benefits package, higher pay, and a more inviting work environment. Otherwise employees cannot be expected to go beyond the bare minimum of their job description .
