I worked at Western Union full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Flexible working hours and good balance of work/life. Challenging work and good experience.

    Cons

Jobs are outsourcing. Less and less development positions left. Some groups are very stressful but some are lay back. And sometimes it's hard to talk between different groups.

    Advice to Management

In the long run, out-sourcing maybe will cost more than development in house

    Approves of CEO

    Pros

Company has interesting ideas for new products, a core of good knowledge concentrated within few resources, and with the right management style has the potential to succeed. Cash cow operating within the grey area of the Banking world with millions of customers worldwide and the largest agent network ever assembled.

    Cons

Cost cutting measures promised by the new CEO positioning the company for sale within few years rather than growth. Management is disconnected from the reality on the ground. "Do more with less" attitude will only work so far as lapses in technology, adequate training and knowledge sharing will eventually catch up. A good portion of the mid level management are "lifers" without exposure to the realities of the market. New ideas are not received well as change is very hard to implement. Job concerns create an environment where questions regarding strategy, ideas to enhance execution or any other improvement are not welcomed. Opportunities for advancement are rare at best and are based on the "like" factor rather than performance. The company is still figuring out how to implement pay for performance structure that will not work until everyone will be part of the 360 process with additional reviewers being picked outside of the local teams that tend to "help" each other out. Overall, as my title suggests, if you are looking for a place to take a "break" from the stress of the real business world this is the place for you. 9 to 4:30 with an hour lunch is the norm.

    Advice to Management

Get people outside of their comfort zones by mandatory rotations into other business units. Start with middle management (Manager to Director levels). Bring fresh talent from outside of the company and other industries to facilitate new ideas. Support those individuals as they take on the "old guard" and implement change . Get rid of "politicians" and "consultants" who seem to care more about their job than the performance and end results. Ensure that HR is independent from the business to ensure fair review process. Ensure everyone is accountable and promote knowledge sharing to improve efficiency.
