I have been working at Westinghouse as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

People are very friendly and enjoyable to work with.

    Cons

A processes are antiquated and a lot of time is wasted on task that could easily be done by a computer.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest more time in processes that increase efficiency than doing work that can easily be done by a computer.

I worked at Westinghouse full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I worked with good people and was given freedom in my job. When there was no work backlog flexible work weeks were great. The facilities are great.

    Cons

The nuclear industry is stagnant and the nuclear renaissance is on hold indefinitely. Lack of leadership is preventing the company from moving forward. The company is very hesitant to change and as one employee in a large company there is little one can do to implement change in a stubborn company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management needs to take the time to better understand the inter-workings of the company. Continuous reorganizations are not helping. Take the managers out of the meetings they are in all day so they can focus on getting things done.

    Pros

Intelligent people to work with, always new challenges to conquer, a lot to learn, valuable industry for the betterment of not just the US but the world. You can change a lot of lives through electricity.

    Cons

Management can be like the good old boys system at times, but you just have to develop your relationships and be sure to never burn bridges. Very long projects - sometimes it's difficult to see the end.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Develop the new talent and reduce the risk of losing decades of valuable experience when the older folks retire.

I have been working at Westinghouse as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

If one is interested they can typically have a very long career with the company. They obviously do something right. When most people retire they seem to have at least 30+ years with the company.

    Cons

Very limited opportunities for career growth and advancement. Most technical/engineering positions become paper pushers instead of doing real engineering work. The processes to follow are so onerous that it is no wonder projects are typically late and over budget.

I have been working at Westinghouse full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    The salaries are competitive

    Cons

The managers have a Laissez-faire style of leadership. One can get lost in the Westinghouse machine and no one is the wiser.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take notes from the top 10 rated companies. Making your employees happy will affect the bottom line. Develop meaningful KPI from the lowest level to the top. Often time those on the bottom have no idea what they are working to.

    Pros

Decent pay. Good benefits. Good work life balance

    Cons

The place is a dump. They don't care about safety. They don't care about anything you have to say. They don't care about improvements "we've been doing it this way for 30 years why stop now".

I have been working at Westinghouse full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The people in my department are very dedicated and are some of the best I've worked with. Each one of them brings a unique set of skills that allows the group to complete difficult and technically challenging projects.

    Cons

Morale has been a major issue due no raises for this fiscal year and layoffs in the previous year. Overtime is offered for exempt employees but you have to work 8 hours of casual (free) overtime per week and accrue 300hours of CTO (credited time off) that requires director approval - in essence there is no overtime pay for exempt employees. CTO can only be used with director approval, basically making it unusable. Mandatory overtime has been implemented for some employees due to a specific project needing to make a deadline. Other employees are under constant threat of mandatory uncompensated overtime although they've meet their project commitments.

There are no leaders throughout management. They are unwilling to backup their employees and fold when push by higher levels of management so not to be seen as trouble maker. Each has an agenda that does not align with the message put out by our CEO and conflicting instructions are often given causing chaos within the ranks.

Promotions are non-existent unless you are in management.

Performance ratings are not based on work performed but who you know and how willing you are to back their decision no matter how bad.

The use of the term "Safety Culture" is used as an excuse by management to make the working conditions hostel at times by enforcing rules that make no sense. Someone is always around to point out what you done wrong but not what was done right.

Claim to be a highly technical company. Technical Excellence is being replaced with COTS (commercial off the shelf) and seriously reducing the expertise and knowledge base of the engineers and technical staff.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Practice what you preach. Just because you have a title does not instantly make you a leader. Leadership is earned, not given. Earn it!

Consider your employees when making a decision. If you have happy employees you will instill a sense of worth and loyalty in them making them go the extra mile to ensure success for Westinghouse, you, and them.

    Pros

The people are great, and as long as you get your work done, mgmt. leaves you alone.

    Cons

Performance reviews here are pre-determined before you even have a sit down with your manager.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Before giving reviews, talk to your people first before giving a generic rating.

    Pros

Nice facilities, although Cranberry area traffic congestion is annoying.

    Cons

Other than poor sales prospects, inept management, office supply purchase freezes, reading mind-numbingly-boring procedures that have nothing to do with what you do, and a constant stream of email reports on the latest bee sting or paper cut, there's nothing wrong with this company.
