Pros
  • I worked with some great people over the years, especially in the emergency response side of operations (in 9 reviews)

  • Laid back mentality (depending on which office though) and a very good work/life balance - they do not work you to death like so many consulting firms (in 5 reviews)

Cons
  • Senior management is too involved in day-to-day business decisions that should be left to the division managers (in 6 reviews)

  • Upper management had a tendency not to address issues early on, instead letting problems fester until only drastic solutions were left as options (in 5 reviews)

    Pros

Employee owned company; great opportunities for those who wish to support DOD And EPA clients; and, excellent technical resources.

    Cons

Misguided leadership; Attempting to achieve profitability by reducing OH; losing great technical staff through voluntary turnover when they need it the most; need realignment at executive management level.

    Advice to Management

As expensive as it may be, it's time to reinvest in your talent. They ARE your greatest assets and the only means to getting you to sustainable profitability. This company can be great again.....

    Pros

Some of the best people you ever work with at the execution level. Sick time was good. These are the only things I miss about working here.

    Cons

Seems like middle/upper management has no idea what they are doing. Do not take care of their employees well. Say one thing and do another. Focus too much on revenue and not profits. Management seems unaware of differences in markets and tries to fit a square peg into a round hole. Bonus program is a joke. Upper management pinches pennies by twisting policies around to hurt the employees that actually make the company money. Upper management make too much money while paying their performers pennies. Stock has plummeted; 401k matches are basically worthless because of this and because you'll never be able to cash in your stock.

    Advice to Management

Stay with Weston and enjoy your high salaries. You won't survive at any other companies.

    Pros

very flexible with working from home and flex hours
    great team-mates
had great culture when could focus on the giving back to society

    Cons

Upper management tries to hard to get big contract even if it is not what the company is qualified to do.
Often promotions are based on buddy feel not who is next/qualified, so need to be very out-spoken to get promoted.
Horrible training program. They company promotes more of fight to work rather than let's make sure you grow with required skills.

    Advice to Management

    sell work we can do.
train your employees (besides required health and safety training)

    Pros

Weston has a strong industry reputation and brand. The services are top notch, the industry knows who Weston is, the general public doesn't. Medium sized company, not large and anonymous.

    Cons

Weston's operations still operates with the mentality the money is flowing. Weston's growth has slowed drastically, and too rise above the problems of the last 3 years, operations needs to change it's thinking.

    Advice to Management

Take control and demand accountability for the sales.

    Pros

    Laid back workplace
Flexibility in schedule and ability to work from home
    Some great coworkers

    Cons

Depending on how you enter the company, they may look upon you as "entry level" forever, despite professional development and growth.
A lot of "work hoarders"; having billable hours is everything and can become a daily fight.
Promotes being a safety culture, but frequently makes questionable, obvious safety choices.

    Advice to Management

Allow room for growth and development for employees; quit pigeon-holing them when they have the desire and ability to do more.
Stop slowing taking away all the benefits and perks.

    Pros

Close knit company, you can develop your company wide network pretty fast.

    Cons

Relative small size of company makes it vulnerable. Bad performance of one unit easily effects the whole company

    Advice to Management

Please focus more on Profit earning type of work, than just trying to expand.

    Pros

Still a few good people left, though many are continuing to leave for better places. Company continues to be open to setting your own schedule.

If somehow Weston survives this without adding CH2M to the title as the current buzz is, there will be so much room for advancement with all the holes, you could move up quickly.

    Cons

The company used to be one that had lower salaries, but made up for that with other benefits. Unfortunately those benefits are now gone. Weston has one of the worst health insurance packages in the business now, have cancelled raises for 2015, and have told employees they will not be paid more than 40 hours a week (but will continue to bill the client if you want to work more than 40 hours each week). Most of the great personnel in this company have left for greener pastures, and have not been replaced. Yet the company is still losing money and isn't making any real changes that could help turn it around. The new CEO even refuses to accept questions from the staff as previous CEOs have, and will only release prerecorded statements each quarter (at what is said to be an employee owned company).

    Advice to Management

Try and find some real changes if you want to turn the company around rather than continue putting short term band aids on that ruin the company for the employees and clients. Every new policy is geared around a short term numbers bump. If you are going to sell it as it appears is the plan, do it.

    Pros

    -Community/family feel within the office
    -Sick leave
    -Flexible hours

    Cons

-New organization structure. No longer office based, say hello to supervisors and managers in different states you've never met who are rating your performance while not knowing what you do at all. I came to Weston because it was the exact opposite of this. Now they have reversed their entire corporate organization structure to mirror other large companies, even though we're a small company.
    -New overtime policy-Doesn't exist!
-Poor vacation-Only your years working at Weston count. If you come into Weston with 5 years work experience, you're only given 2 weeks of vacation. They expect you to work another 5 years at Weston before you can gain an additional week.
-Annual Raises-Delayed, will they ever come? New company-wide police to delay merit raises over a full year. Great way to increase moral and hold on to that key staff you have..
-Layoffs!-So many layoffs. Meanwhile key technical staff are leaving in droves. No incentives to stay, and constant fear of being laid off. Work load is dwindling, and no new projects on the horizon.

    Advice to Management

    Come back to reality

    Pros

Laid back attire (no suits), paid overtime, travel, paid per diem, racked up hotel and flight points, lots of field work, excellent managers, kind and friendly staff.

    Cons

Tracking of hours (timesheet game) can be frustrating, no work = no billable hours = bad (sometimes), most employees keep to themselves.
