Highly political, focus on governance/process rather than achieving outcomes, cronyism, rewards style over substance

Project Roles (Former Employee) Sydney (Australia)

ProsWestpac Group's many businesses (St George, BTFG, Rams, BankSA, Asgard, etc) provide great opportunity to move across retail and business banking brands, as well as into wealth management and financial advice industries.

Great place to work in projects as PM or BA because there are always projects going on within the different brands, and industries under the Westpac banner.

ConsProbably the worst culture I've ever experienced. Culture of credit-stealing, cronyism, politics. Rewards and promotes people who are loud and arrogant over people who are intelligent yet humble.
Extremely political environment, no one wants to take accountability but everyone wants authority over decisions, and be a 'sign off'.
Westpac want to be the number 1 service provider in Australia, yet are no better than number 2 in any major market. And they're only number 2 in markets where their size helps them compete.
Westpac people actually think Westpac is a really smart and successful organisation. It's not. It's competitive by virtue of its size.

Advice to Senior ManagementTry to change the Westpac Bank culture towards a BTFG or even St George culture. Leave those brands and their businesses alone - there is a reason you bought them.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company
