    On balance - positive

    Manager (Former Employee)
    Sydney (Australia)

ProsOf all the organisations that I have worked for, Westpac has the best balance. Given it's size, there are pockets of good and bad leadership. The trick is to find the good.
I was particularly proud of Westpac's commitment to the community and supporting diversity in the work place.

ConsThere are way too many pockets of bad leadership and you need to be able to play the political game.

Mixed experiences. Plenty of great people but it did feel like there is too much dead wood in there.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Sydney (Australia)

ProsThey are trying to be an employee friendly bank. They want to look after their staff and give them flexibility and a good work/life balance. Depending on team this could be the case or it could be lip service only so it is worth getting clear views from your manager.

On the whole there was a healthy atmosphere at a personal level but a lot of career grumbling. It seemed to suit people that were looking for a quiet life.

ConsReally slow to change anything and the bureaucracy was heavy. A lot of effort seemed to be around managing how targets were reported rather than building the business itself as this was easier than implementing actual change. Because of this I didn't feel I was increasing my personal skill set and would learn more at other companies.

Advice to Senior ManagementSet clear goals and let employees work to those. Management should focus on making sure the tools and systems are in place and avoid having too many 'interested' decision makers about. Make sure the focus is on what will affect the game, not hot topics.

fullfilling, rewarding, limited work life balance

    Finance Manager (Former Employee)
    Sydney (Australia)

ProsMarket rate salaries for finance, good formal learning and development opportunites and investment in systems, good leadership team

Conslong work hours, minimal work life balance, finance department did not seem to receive fair share of bonus pool,

Advice to Senior ManagementInvest more in succession planning, consider the long hours support team are working - which is not productively sustainable

Decent place to work for if you are tied up by children/family burden

ProsWorking hours are flexible and workload is acceptable. In general, Westpac is the place to have work life balance while you get paid above average salary in the financial services industry. Westpac is a huge organisation and it does encourage people to move around different teams. For example, a department head is required to swap roles with another department head every 3 to 4 years in order to challenge themselves. Employee benefits are excellent and can save heaps of money.

ConsSome people are lazy and don't know what they are doing. Since they have been with the bank for a long time, the company cannot get rid of them easily. If you are a highly ambitious employee, you should look elsewhere. This is the domestic commercial bank for people who want work life balance.

    Conservative and safe

    Risk Manager (Current Employee)
    Sydney (Australia)

Pros- Work life balance with flexible arrangements
    - Positive culture that embraces diversity in the workplace
    - Career opportunities with so much movement going on

Cons- Career advancement linked to lip-service, not merit
    - Too much silo'ed thinking and decision making, not enough cross division collaboration
    - Systems need improvement and lags peers

Advice to Senior ManagementMake more hard and gutsy decisions that will setup the company for the future and ahead of the pack. The bank does not have a clear competitive advantage.
