They are one of the few companies around that still offer pension. They value their employees and respect one another.

Because it is a big company, perhaps there is still politics involved. However, it did not affect me that much.

Keep up the good work, I think all the leaders are well-apt, and take pride in doing what they do.

Safe work environment, good quality safety equipment.
Cons
Long hours/ shift work. Unfair negotiating tactics from mangement, constant struggle to receive agreed upon payraises, poor follow through on promises.

Technology is treated as a necessary evil. Thus they have no clear direction for those that work in IT. Applications, infrastructure and vendors are swapped out on a monthly basis.
No IT Leadership. The current business that makes the money claims the direction conch. The CIO position has been diluted to figurehead by committee position at the director level.
Keep the Lights On: This company used to be known for its innovation. Technology was what set it apart from the competition. The survival mentality has brought up a generation of leadership that will not invest in people or technology. They count on the last remaining remnants of their glory days: The loyalty of their employees.
Arrogance: They offer an IT salary and compensation that is equal to other Timber companies and yet they are only 20 miles away from the top IT companies in the world.
Advice to Senior Management
Invest in IT. This does not mean getting an iPad for everyone on the 5th floor. Hire an outside CIO that has technology as a background. Consolidate infrastructure and applications from multiple versions of the same product to one. Compensate your IT employees on the local market value. Correct your manager to employee ratio.

-If you are willing to work hard, you will advance quickly
-If you are a female or minority, you will advance quickly
-Big corporation, many benefits and perks to make you feel that you are taken care of

-Very poor upper level management (I have been told it is region specific and my region is considered poor)
-Preferential treatment to "boot lickers"
-Some coworkers will follow you and check into your daily work activities to inform management
-Upper level management encourages and supports females and minorities, but some company employees with 10+ years experience work hard to devalue such individuals
-Many promotions are earned yet there are also just as many who receive theirs by favoritism
-Many long-standing employees are useless and don't do their jobs
Advice to Senior Management
-Work to help employees feel secure in their positions
-Discourage tattle-tails
-Encourage and promote creativity of young employees and discourage older employees from devaluing them
-Eliminate the terrible managers that have absolutely no ability to manage
-Eliminate the useless employees that do terrible work
-Empower managers to be able to remove the useless employees

Very slow to react, outdated management practices, didn't reward for performance.
Advice to Senior Management
Bring in some talent other than from the real estate business. Truly seek to innovate at all levels--business processes, products and services.

The pay is good and there are alot of "perks". Having one week off per month is great and the vacation time (length)is fair, for length of service.
Cons
They are chauvinistic towards women. Had problems with this the entire time. Working twelve hour swing shift is very hard on kids and family life.

Need to drop all of the PC crap and just do what needs to be done for best of company.

When it was a large company there were opportunities to move between businesses to expand your knowledge of the company and build skills in other systems. Benefits and pay were good.
Cons
Lack of true leadership of the company. CEO at that time did not relate well to senior management team or employees. People were not recognized as assets of the company.
Advice to Senior Management
Current CEO needs to value the people still with the company and acknowledging their contributions. Improve the 'Weyerhaeuser' name as it once represented a family run businesss where employees were respected.
Pros
Depends on what decade you refer to, used to be the people and the managers were great. It was always pro-people and one felt valued. Classic Weyerhaeuser managers focused on keeping the clutter that trickled down from on high from interfering with our work and production. All one had to do was the job. Period. I am lucky to have had a long career with a great company in the good times. And to have finally escaped the banality of what it sadly became. Job rating 1978-2007 = 9/10. Rating 2007-2011 = 1/10. Huge difference. Had a great time mostly, not bitter, not sad, just kind of a shame of what has befallen perhaps.
Cons
In the last 3-4 years it all went badly at R&D, primarily due to almost cartoonishly bad onsite management. Hard to know what happened, or who is to blame, but basically during SG&A reductions, many good people were targeted for layoff programs, but their managers always survived and got 'reassigned'. The place became a circus tent of way too many average-at-best managers, with nothing to do but annoy, pester and make life difficult and do so on a daily basis. Someone had decided that they needed to become more hands-on I suppose. By late 2008 an inane fascination with process and safety had overidden any focus on production. One had to work hard to just keep busy. So called improvements on safety and the RIR after 2008 has been a disorganized 3 ring circus, truly absurd to see it happen. I finally learned what the old saying 'inmates running the asylum' means. Painfull.
Advice to Senior Management
Why bother? I'm a lowly peasant, they the annoited, are cozy in bed with Wall Street and living large, their jobs always end with a huge golden parachute, if they do end.. I will say that the fact that the company leadership does not seem to know how silly and unproductive their expensive R&D facility has become since 2008, does not reflect highly on their management acumen. If you cats were as smart as your bank accounts tell you, then clean the management up over there from top down, go back to flat and lean, or close it down, it's a joke.
