I worked at Wheelabrator full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The company has great benefits and there are some really nice and helpful, (mostly hourly) people working with this company. That’s about it for the “pros”.

    Cons

“Cons”…where to start? The company takes great pride in their OHSA VPP Star program status, but at the Shasta plant where I was at, it is primarily “safety“when it works and doesn’t get in the way of what the current Plant Manager what’s to have done and when he wants it done by.
At this site, the “management team” seems to be intimated by those who actually have an idea of what is going on and make every attempt to keep them under thump to hold them in their place and reward and advance only those employees that are “good little yes men”. During my 12 years at this site most of the plants management personnel position had rolled over numerous times, can’t seem to keep good folks in the top spots. When positions need to be filled it takes an extremely long time period and in the past few years not filled with the best or brightest of talent.

I worked at Wheelabrator as an intern (more than an year)

    Pros

Employees are friendly and hard-working. The corporate office was a really nice place--cafeteria was fantastic. Work given to interns was interesting and useful--not just busywork or copying.

    Cons

The company seems to be struggling due to waste prices, electricity prices, environmental regulations, etc. Some fear among employees due to the uncertain future of their jobs. There wasn't always enough work to keep interns busy--sometimes managers would be too busy to pass work down.

I have been working at Wheelabrator full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Doing something good for the environment, converting municipal waste to energy. Good track record of providing competitive benefits and pay. Several new waste-to-energy projects in the planning stages.

    Cons

Since being taken over by Waste Management, forced to concentrate on cutting costs. Takes a long time to fill open jobs, still a good opportunity if you don't mind working some overtime.

    I worked at Wheelabrator

    Pros

Interesting tasks and projects, smart and friendly people, warm atmosphere, honest business, fair bonus system.
Right place to get good professional experience.

    Cons

Unsustainable management system, lack of personal responsibility within management. Some managers try to push problems down on his/her staff instead of solving them on his/her own level or escalating up to the higher one, maybe because of low competence. It's a pity...
