Pros
Amazing pay and benefits. Great bonuses if the company is meeting EOP plans. Great industry heritage in terms of brand recognition and value.
Cons
Due to its small-town locale, the place is infested by frightened "yes men and women." The company hires some amazing talent but leadership won't listen or trust the guidance provided. They usually say its people not working hard enough if they are told that the target numbers are too unrealistic. And, those who share that fact are put on the fast track to being demoted, fired or laid off. Accordingly, others see the repercussions of truth telling so become "yes men" to protect their jobs. The sad fact is that because this is a global headquarters located in a backwards town rivaling southern civil rights news video depictions there is no place for a disenchanted or fired employee to go for a new job. Feeling trapped but well paid, people just do and say what is expected even if it's completely illogical.
Advice to Senior Management
Fire yourselves. Get fresh authority in terms of the CEO and President as soon as humanly possible. Stop hiring egotistical talent from abroad because they are the only ones willing to live in such a God forsaken area.
Pros
The managers treat you fairly when it comes to balancing personal life and work life. They offer a fair benefits package.
Cons
Every department is its own cell. Their is no feeling of being one company at Whirlpool right now.
Advice to Senior Management
Get the structure of compensation, and employee advancement universal for all facilities.
Pros
Geographically-wise it is a nice environment. Close to mountains and lakes. Good for enthusiasts of ‘la dolce vita’, people are slow, work seems to be the last priority and you can get away with such approach very easily.
Cons
Very nepotistic work culture, no clarity or sense of fairness on promotions, trainings or any work-related career advancement.
Advice to Senior Management
LIVE the values you talk about. So far they are only on paper.
Pros
Work culture is good and friendly
Cons
Technological not very advanced and needs more and more advanced products to compete with its competitors
Pros
Strong brands and retailers to be involved with
Cons
Low morale and dissatisfaction with the location
Advice to Senior Management
Pay attention to competitors, they are watching you
Pros
Very good compensation package at Whirlpool
Cons
Healthcare benefits not so good
Advice to Senior Management
Need to communicate more at upper management level
Pros
Empowerment and Freedom to create our tomorrow. Fast track career growth, early differentiated roles and open and inclusive culture.
Cons
High tolerance for low performance
Pros
Great people! Being on Lake Michigan in the summer is very nice! Great community to live and work in.
Cons
Lack of ability in middle management. Slow to present advancement opportunities
Advice to Senior Management
People are your best assets!...(or so you say...) Recognize your top performers, reward them appropriately and continue to challenge them. The economy will rebound and without rewarding your top performers, they will find better opportunities outside of Whirlpool.
Pros
The people at Whirlpool are amazing. It's truly a company that thinks about YOU as an important attribute to the business rather than you as a number.
Cons
The biggest downside is the fact that all of the production facilities are in different locations, so it can be quite difficult to understand, knowledge share, and incorporate best practices across various product categories.
Advice to Senior Management
The management team at Whirlpool does a great job of continuously communicating its goals and paths towards accomplishing those goals, however it doesn't demonstrate that its taken employee feedback and really incorporated it into the "next steps" or "refinements."
Pros
Flexible with time off. Great people in manufacturing.
Cons
The company is so disinterested in finding educationally qualified engineers that they will stick the engineering label on anyone. Some of the so called engineers have an Engineering Technology degree (which is not ABET accredited as a real engineering degree). Some people have an Associates degree and many, many of them have no education whatsoever. If you wonder how much importance management places on education credentials go look at the company org charts. The education section is OPTIONAL. The management is often promoted based on ethnicity or sexual gender (or preference to foreigners) and many managers have neither the educational credentials nor any experience whatsoever...this certainly does nothing to diminish their complete arrogance. Additionally, the company is so C2C process obsessed that a simple 2 hour task takes months to do. I can't blame them for feeling the need to hold engineer's hands and constantly monitor what they do, however. If I hired in the people they do for high level positions, I would want to watch them constantly too. I do not know of one engineer in the entire corporation that I would trust to design anything without the need to get help from 50 of their collegues and 10 X the time to finish the job as would be required, were they not so process obsessed.
Advice to Senior Management
Get experience and proper credentials and come back in 10 years. By the way..get some CAD people that know how to design.
