Great People, Great Products, Mediocre Leadership in Consumer Care, Improving Work Environment

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsSome of the best people ever:
    * Dedicated
    * Hard-working and gifted
    * Trade customer and consumer centric
    * Best corporate values (on paper) in the industry

Products one can really believe in:
    * Pursuit of quality, performance, reliability was genuine and actualized
    * Pride in many products being American made
    * Brands really differentiate the customer base in a meaningful manner

    Work environment
    * Some new buildings and remodeling of older buildings is better late than never
    * Open floor concept is great for interpersonal communication - not so much for meetings.
    * Performance based rewards with an improving quarterly and annual review process
    * One of best compensation and benefits for the area, but lower in the industry

ConsLeadership from the top down is mediocre at best (from some one with 47 years of work/leadership experience)
    * Undistinguished compensation packages - always felt like company was doing you a favor to reward performance - not a celebration of mutual success
    * Poor work/life balance except for those who are part of the inner circle of cronies
    * Some of the worst mid-level management ever experienced because lack of training and compassion
    * HR is disingenuous and more concerned about pleasing top management than building people
    * Poor career patching due to lack of clarity of job roles and poor communication
    * Antiquated computer systems, telephones, software but attempts at improvement were being made

Advice to Senior Management* Live the Whirlpool values before all else - even before the need of quarterly profit
    * Train managers and make them responsible for the group performance and work environment.
    * Do not be so fiscally conservative with investing in the education/training, work environment and tools for employees at all levels. Actually require time-off for education/training annually with a required plan for implementation of new ideas, concepts and success measures for all employee. Share the load of success.

Pay is great if you can stand the politics

    Senior Engineer (Current Employee)
    Cleveland, TN

ProsThey pay you enough to consider ignoring your morel compass when it comes losing your sense of team work and exploiting your individuality

ConsEveryone is out to make themselves look better, even at the expense of others. This is a result of the promoted culture through the Personal Metrics of Performance.

Advice to Senior ManagementNot everyone thinks, acts and feels the same way. If you really want to preach diversity and inclusion, you should understand this is not strictly race and sexual preference.

    Great company that values loyalty.

    Financial Analyst (Current Employee)
    Benton Harbor, MI

ProsIt is located in a small town so if you wan't to live in a rural location it is a great option. They really do value development and loyalty so there are opportunities available to develop and in certain cases switch functions.

ConsCan be somewhat cliquey. If you enter through a rotational program you will have an easier path to growth than as a direct hire. backfilling and promotions are done more on a "who do you know?" basis than by utilizing HR to actively determine who is the best fit. Employees that work in functions outside of Sales, Mktg and Engineering will find it harder to advance. Support functions like finance, supply chain, IT, procurement, etc are much flatter.

Advice to Senior Managementcreate a more robust HR department that can better identify and promote talent.

I was empolyed there for 1 year in sales, the company was very innovative and provided its employees withj all the tools

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

Prosglobal company, upper mgmt interacted with people, sales conferences were a way to learn about people product and services, laid back work environment, innovative company, room for growth if you are willing to relocate

ConsThe sales plans were skewed, hard to make sales goals

Family oriented company but lacks opportunities for women and minorities

    Director (Current Employee)
    Benton Harbor, MI

ProsCareer opportunities are abundant up to the manager level. Many lateral opportunities. Ethical company that is family oriented. Good employee discounts and developmental opportunities. Excellent bonus system.

ConsWomen and minorities are under-represented at the Director and above levels of the organization and we don't see intentional actions by the company to address this. We target women as our primary customer - why wouldn't we have more women running the company? Performance reviews are a game - balance out the ratings for the distribution curve and hope you are not one of the bottom rankings this time.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou want to be seen as progressive you have to look, act, sound, and feel like you and thus the company are progressive. Wishing one thing and acting another will not get you seen as contemporary as your competitors.

No right way to do a wrong thing

    Sales Director (Current Employee)
    Benton Harbor, MI

ProsGreat company rich with top talent. Whirlpool has every opportunity to excel and grow and even dominate the industry. It is flush with top talent and those willing to put forth the right efforts to drive the company towards their every goal. You'll find the greatest talent still within the company, while it continues to farm out through attrition the rest of their talent to their competitors and ancillary industries.

ConsBureaucracy is weighing down all the potential. The company feels rotten within itself with cronyism and nepotism awarding positions to people unproven and people who have never stayed within position long enough to actually have delivered against an objective, and yet they thrive with their naive opinions. Too slow to act

Advice to Senior ManagementWake up to the talent loss, clarify the steps and assessment for individual growth. In this industry, you'll need people willing to take risk and management not so eager to hand out punishment.

    Good Place to Work

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Saint Joseph, MI

ProsVery laid back and friendly. Lots of changes to be more lean and to eliminate the old-school mentality with respect to work hours, work attire, years vs. company instead of performance-based promotions, etc. Very short commute unless you decide to make it longer. In general, the work-life balance is above average compared to other large companies. Very diverse workforce and lots of international opportunities, if you are interested in that. Many career path opportunities.

ConsCan be VERY slow to promote its people, especially in the tech center for fabric care (laundry) engineers. Smaller town == no other major employers in the area. Bonus is not guaranteed to be a specific amount; it fluctuates based on company performance == on bad years, salaries are not competitive. Housing prices are higher than normal in the area due to tourism.

Advice to Senior ManagementIf you want top talent to remain, then get rid of the forced ranking system. If you only hire top talent, none of those people want to hear that they are just "ok" or "average". If they are above average, they should be told so, not forced into a bucket so your numbers work out.

Great People, terrible leadership, product quality not great.

    Lead Engineer (Former Employee)
    Monterrey, Nuevo León (Mexico)

ProsWork environment is very good in general, people and coworkers are kind and cooperative. There's a lot of technical training available for employees. Relative good life/work balance but depending on position. Great for people starting their careers.

ConsFor a global company whirlpool has limited resources in what counts, starting with labs and simulation resources all the way up to poor computers and available tools. In general leadership is terrible, there are some good leaders but there are people occupying high responsibility positions that lack technical people skills and don't set fair goals. Some of the good leaders are going away to work somewhere else. Employee 1 to 5 rating system is outdated, its perception-based to a great extend and labels people with mediocre 3's or bad boy 4's, even the 1's don't get much benefit anyway so it does not make a big difference... in the rating meetings people you don't worth with have a say according to what the perceive of you on your rating, this impacts bonuses and morale, etc . . . Staying after hours and excessive load burden upon employees in north america and mexico is not uncommon. What was once a great american company is now disappointing.

Advice to Senior ManagementA complete turn around to your outdated 1 to 5, perception based rating system and goal settings for yours employee is needed if you want to retain talent. Make sure you focus on improving leadership -especially in Mexico- with specific goals, and renew when necessary , bad leaders create a big impact in peoples performance. Separate plant operations support from product development for an efficient work environment. Provide employees with GREAT computers and laptops in Mexico and NAR, lenovo laptops are a shame, I never saw a global company with so poor working resources.

    You Suck

    Assembler (Current Employee)
    Marion, OH

Prosit's a paycheck, good money. Thats all i can say about that.

Consincompetent management. how they treat their employees. Forced overtime all the time, They don't care if their employees get hurt. Work them like dogs so they can get rich. They allow bulling to go on even if it means the health of others.

Advice to Senior Managementdo your job, protect your people instead of walking on them.
